Gelhar On Fire As Women's Basketball Gets Huge Road Win At Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Saint Martin's University women's basketball team got a big win on the road on Saturday evening behind the lights out play of junior guard Angela Gelhar who poured in a career-high 36 points to lead SMU past Alaska Anchorage, 85-78.

The win in Anchorage was the first since 2006 while it was the the Saints highest offensive output in a game since 2009.

Gelhar was unstoppable on Saturday night from nearly everywhere going 6-of-9 from the three-point line and 12-of-14 from the free throw line. It was the third time this season she has made 10 or more free throws in a game and her 36 points was the fifth most in a single game in SMU history. It also marked the first time that a Saints player has scored 30 or more points since Dara Zak in 2010.

The Saints got off to a fast start opening up a 20-9 lead less than six minutes into the game, 20-9, on a jumper from Chelsea Haskey. UAA would cut it to two points eventually taking its first lead of the game, 33-32, at 4:12 and extending it to three points. But SMU closed out the first half, the final 1:42, on a 6-1 run to take a 43-41 advantage into the break.

SMU's lead grew to as many as nine points in the second but Seawolves continued to hang around trailing by just three with 3:12 left in the game. But Gelhar could not be stopped bury three pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Saints in the final three minutes.

The Saints finished the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three hitting 10-of-18 three pointers. Even more important, Saint Martin's shot 85.3 percent from the free throw line while hitting 16-of-17 shots from the charity stripe alone in the second half.

Ciara Pedroni came off the bench to finish with 12 points. Jordyn Richardson added 11 points, three asissts and two steals while Haskey chipped in with 10 points and nine boards.

SMU (10-4, 4-1 GNAC) hosts two big games at home next week starting with Simon Fraser on Thursday, Jan. 16th. It will be a Black Out at Marcus Pavilion. All fans are encouraged to wear black.
