LACEY, Wash. - Three Saints hit double-digits in kills as the Saints rolled the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College in four sets (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19) in an exhibition match.
The Saints (7-11) used an early 7-1 run to open up a lead in the first set, backed by kills from
Megan Vernoy and a service ace from
Hannah Neumann. The Geoducks (7-14) stormed back to take the lead at 9-8 before the Saints rattled off eight of the next 11 points with kills from
Rebecca Mitchell and
Rachel Gondrezick. Later in the set, the score was tied at 20-20 before the Saints closed out the set by capturing five of the next six points behind
Kamille Langford's four kills.
Once again, the Saints jumped out to an early lead on a 7-1 run and extended their lead to 12-4 capped off by a service ace from Mitchell. Saint Martin's, behind the efforts of
Liz Larson,
Emily Gooding, Vernoy and
Nicolette Nesbitt, sealed the set victory easily at a score fo 25-17.
In the third set, the Geoducks fell behind 14-10 before going on a 9-2 run to capture a 19-16 lead. The Saints answered back with a 6-2 run to regain at the lead at 22-21 before Evergreen State ended the set on a quick 4-1 advantage, winning their lone set of the match.
The Saints quickly dominated the fourth and final set, taking a 12-4 lead, highlighted by kills from six different Saints. The Geoducks trimmed the score to within six multiple times throughout the set; however, the Saints denied the comeback attempt and clinched the match victory on a kill from Gooding.
Leading the Saints in kills on the night was Mitchell with 14 kills, followed by Vernoy at 11 and Langford with 10. Gooding and Larson tied with seven kills each and Gondrezick recorded five. Nesbitt and
Jordan Keane split time at the setter position, combining for a total of 55 assists. The Saints tallied seven service aces and nine blocks as a team.
Courtney Misner led the match wtih 27 digs, while Mitchell (17) and Neumann (9) contributed towards the Saints' 84 total digs.
