Elin Johansson's Dominating Performance Leads Saints To Win

LACEY, Wash. - Fueled by Elin Johansson's 30-point, 11-rebound performance and Saniah Simpson-Patu's double-double, the Saints rolled Pacific University, 84-64, inside Marcus Pavilion.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the exhibition, taking a 10-5 edge, highlighted by five straight points for Johansson. The Boxers knocked down back-to-back threes to gain an 11-10 lead with 3:47 left in the first quarter. On the following play, Johansson found a slashing Simpson-Patu for her first basket of the game to give the Saints back the lead. Simpson-Patu's layup sparked a 10-0 run by the Saints as closed out the quarter. Makenna Schultz contributed four points and and Simpson-Patu connected on another layup.

The Boxers opened the second quarter with two 3-pointers; however, the Saints responded with 3-pointers from Rebekah Baugh to keep SMU up 26-16 with 8:20 left in the half. Pacific cut the Saints lead down to 26-21 in the following minutes before the Saints responded with an 8-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Baugh and Hannah Reynolds. With the Saints' largest lead of the half, 36-24, with 3:24 left in the half, the Boxers knocked down multiple 3-pointers to trim the halftime lead to 41-35.

Like the first half, Johansson sparked the Saints' offense, starting the 11-2 run with a layup on a put back attempt. After a Johansson free throw and a Pacific basket, Jayla Russ scored on back-to-back plays down in the paint. Johansson converted one more free throw before Baugh capped off the run with a 3-pointer to put the Saints up 15 with 4:10 left in the quarter. The Saints responded once again after the Boxers cut the score to 54-45, with baskets from Schultz and Johansson to put SMU up 61-48 after the third quarter.

Reynolds and Simpson-Patu carried the Saints in the final 10 minutes, scoring 13 straight points, giving the Saints' a 74-53 lead at 6:27 left in the game. Johansson added six more points down the stretch, along with points from Sara Bowen as the Saints closed out the 20-point victory over Pacific.

Johansson lead all scorers with 30-points, along with 11-rebounds, four assists with only one turnover and no personal fouls. Simpson-Patu followed up her double-double at The Evergreen State College with a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double. Reynolds was second on team with 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Baugh scored all 12 of her points from deep, while Schultz added nine points and team leading five assists off the bench. 

The Saints' 84 points was the most since 2014 when the Saints dropped 85-points against Alaska Anchorage. SMU shot 31-of-65 (47.7 percent) from the floor, 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) beyond the arc and 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) at the line. The Saints lead the Boxers in rebounds (36-32), assists (18-15), steals (9-4) and forced 18 turnovers, compared to 10 turnovers given up. Saint Martin's scored 44 points in the paint compared the Boxers' 14.

Saint Martin's first official game of the 2017-18 season is Saturday, Nov 11 against Cal State San Bernardino as part of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge. Tip-off is scheduled for noon, with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
