LACEY, Wash. - Behind
Rebecca Mitchell's 21 kills and
Nicolette Nesbitt's 43 assists, the Saints broke the school record for most wins in a single season with nine as SMU upset Simon Fraser in straight sets (25-22, 26-24, 25-22) inside Marcus Pavilion.
The Saints (9-16, 4-13) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead over Simon Fraser (13-12, 10-7) on multiple kills from Mitchell. The Clan responded to tie the match at 9-9 before kills by Mitchell and Larson along with a combo block for the two, gave SMU a 12-9 lead. Simon Fraser once again tied the match four more times in the following points, the latest being 19-19. Mitchell and Rachel Gondrezick combined for back-to-back kills, and a SFU attacking error put the Saints up three. After two points by the Clan, the Saints closed out the 25-22 set victory with two more kills by Gondrezick.
The second set began with a gridlock, with both teams tied on the scoreboard at 7-7. Once again, Mitchell and Larson rattled off kills, followed by a combo block by the two to put SMU back on top at 10-7. After trading points through the next several serves, kills from Gondrezick, Mitchell, Larson and Kamille Langford extended the Saints' lead to five at 18-13. The Clan used a 6-2 run to knot the match at 21-21. Megan Vernoy's kill gave the Saints a 22-21 lead until Simon Fraser pushed the Saints to set point on a quick 3-1 run, at 24-23. The Saints rallied behind senior Mitchell, who connected for three set ending kills to put the Saints up 2-0 going into the set break.
The Saints scored on the first three serves before Simon Fraser took the next four; then Larson and Gondrezick led the Saints back out front at 6-4. Simon Fraser took over the lead in the third set, stretching their to 13-10, the largest of the match. SMU responded back with a seven unanswered points, highlighted by three
Hannah Neumann service aces and two Mitchell kills, to take a 17-13 lead. The Clan cut the Saints' lead to one on multiple occasions, including 21-20. Gondrezick answered the call, striking back-to-back kills, along with a combo block by Langford and Vernoy to put the Saints within one kill of winning the match. After a Clan sideout, Gondrezick ended the match with a kill, collecting the sweep and the Saints' first win over Simon Fraser since 2013.
Rebecca Mitchell led the match with 21 kills on 51 attempts for a .294 attacking percentage to go along with her 14 digs. Gondrezick finished second in the match with 17 kills on 37 attempts for a .351 attacking percentage.
Nicolette Nesbitt fueled the Saints' offense with 43 assists while
Hannah Neumann added three service aces, and 14 digs. Larson, Mitchell and Vernoy combined for nine blocks at the net.
The Saints' victory marked their ninth victory of the season, breaking the school's NCAA D-II record for most wins in a single season.
