Seawolves' defense shuts down Saints 73-31

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Second ranked University of Alaska Anchorage quieted the Saints' offense, 73-31, as the Seawolves extended their winning streak to 20 games.

Alaska Anchorage (24-1, 17-0 GNAC) established control the game early on a 14-2 run to open up the game. The Seawolves never trailed in the game and took a 31-15 lead into halftime.

The Saints (5-20, 1-16) struggled to find any rhythm on the offensive end of the floor, with only three Saints scoring the first half. Shelbie Drey led SMU with six points while Hannah Reynolds added five and Elin Johansson scored four.

After making two baskets in the third quarter, the Saints gained momentum in the final quarter, led by Reynolds who knocked a 3-Pointer and scored on a layup and free-throw. However, the Saints fell 73-31 after Makenna Schultz made two free throws to end the game.

"Make no mistake, UAA is a very good basketball team, but we made it pretty easy for them tonight. You can't play basketball intimidated, fearful and cautious.. Good teams will make you pay and they did every time" said head coach Tim Healy. "I wanted the girls to relax and just play hard. We never relaxed and consequently our performance was pretty dismal".

Reynolds led SMU with 13 points on 4-8 shooting, and 2-4 from beyond the arc. Johansson scored six points and led the team with seven rebounds while Drey also added six points and four rebounds. Mallory Kessler led the bench scoring with three points, followed by, Schultz with two and Shyler Sullivan with one.

As a team, Saint Martin's shot 11-42 (.262) from the field, 2-12 (.167) from deep and was 7-11 (.636) at the free throw line. The Saints grabbed 29 rebounds, tallied 10 assists but turned over the ball 28 times.
