Tritons' late game rally best Saints 4-3 in California

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego used a three run sixth inning to rally past the Saints, as Saint Martin's fell, 4-3, on the road.

Down by two with one out and runners on first and second, Caitlyn Weisner tripled down the right field line to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tritons (4-0) took the lead on the go-ahead single up the middle, by Lauren Sanders, scoring Weisner.

UC San Diego took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly brought home lead-off hitter Kendall Baker.

The Saints' (1-2) bats were quieted through the first four innings until Tessani Dixon led-off the fifth with a hit by pitch. Sabrina Hicks dropped a bunt, and reached base on an infield single, advancing Dixon to second. Jackie Schmaeling provided a key sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. After a ground out, Alyssa Slate came through in the clutch with a go-ahead triple to right-center field. The Saints added another run when lead-off hitter, Lauren Diuco, found grass down the right field line, scoring Slate for a 3-1 lead after five.

The Tritons battled back in the bottom half of the sixth, adding the three runs they needed to take the lead and eventually their fourth straight victory to open the season.
Diuco finished with one hit and one RBI, while Slate went 1-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. Dettling and Hicks both finished with one hit each. SMU as a team finished with four hits, no walks, three strike outs and left two runners on-base.

Lindsay Miller got the start for the Saints, going 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and walking one batter. Jessica O'Toole came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth, retiring two batters but gave up one hit and hit two batters. The Saints as a team failed to strike any Tritons.

"Lindsay Miller threw a great six innings. We struggled with offensive consistency to back up our pitcher" said head coach Rick Noren. "Alyssa Slate hit a triple to give us the lead in the fifth".

Up Next: The Saints turn around and play Dominican right after the conclusion of this game to wrap up a doubleheader and their final game in La Jolla, California. The Saints defeated the Penguins 11-6 on Friday for their first win of the early season.
