BURNBY, British Columbia – Saint Martin's University Softball extended their winning streak to eight before falling to Simon Fraser in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Game One
The Saints (9-3, 5-1 GNAC) fell behind early to the Clan (5-7, 1-1) who took a 4-0 lead after one on a RBI double and a three-run home run to left field.
SMU responded quickly in the second inning with back-to-back home runs from
Jackie Schmaeling and
Corrie Wilson cut the lead to one before
Tessani Dixon's RBI single tied the game at 4-4.
Saint Martin's took the 5-3 lead in the next inning on a pair of RBI singles by
Alyssa Slate and
Mary Dettling scored Wilson and
Lindsay Miller.
With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, a RBI groundout by
Alyssa French scored the sixth run of the game before a Clan error brought home two more.
The Saints added four more runs in the sixth inning, one coming on a groundout and three capitalizing on errors by Simon Fraser, to extend their lead to 13-4.
SFU finished the game with a bang, hitting back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the sixth; however, the Saints held on for 13-6 victory and eighth straight.
Kim Nelson (5-1) pitched another complete game for the Saints, going seven innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, walking none and punching out three.
"I was pretty happy with how our hitters responded in the first game" said head coach
Rick Noren. "Kim (Nelson) did a great job holding them after a rough first inning. We played an all-around good game".
Game Two
Once again the Clan took an early lead behind the power of the long ball with a solo shot that was part of a three run second inning. SFU added one more run on another home run in the bottom half of the third.
Saint Martin's jumped onto the scoreboard after Schmaeling homered for the second time today, driving in two runs and trimming the score to 4-2.
Simon Fraser added insurance runs in the fifth, off of an error, and the sixth, a two-run home run to right, to secure the 9-2 split with SMU.
Lauren Maley (2-1) picked up the start and her first loss of the season after a 2.2 inning, four run, five hit performance.
Jessica O'Toole pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
"Unfortunately the second game was just the opposite from the first game" said Noren. "We didn't pitch, hit or play defense very well and the results showed. Hopefully we come out ready to play tomorrow".
Up Next: The Saints return to the state of Washington with a doubleheader at Western Washington University tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
