Schmaeling Remains Hot At Plate In Split With Concordia

LACEY, Wash. – Behind Jackie Schmaeling's two home runs and Kim Nelson complete game victory, Saint Martin's Softball split their home doubleheader, 7-4 and 7-11, against Concordia University on Saturday.

Game One

Lindsay Miller got the Saints (11-7, 6-4 GNAC) on the board first with a RBI single to center field scoring Corrie Wilson in the bottom of the second.

Concordia (12-15, 5-9) responded quickly and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with two RBI singles to the outfield.

The Cavaliers added one more run the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from McKenzie Smith, scoring Meghan Luebbert.

Schmaeling crushed her sixth home run of the season over the left field net, driving in Mary Dettling and knotting the game at 3-3 after five.

Concordia regained the advantage in the next half inning with a solo home run by second baseman Sam Rice.

The Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game on a Schmaeling walk. Sabrina Hicks gave the Saints their first lead since the second inning with a RBI double to right center later in the inning. Wilson drove in the final runs of the game with a RBI double to right field, plating Schmaeling and giving SMU a 7-4 victory.

Nelson (7-2) earned the win after pitching a complete game, with four run on nine hits, while walking one batter and punching out four.

"It was a great comeback in the first game for us as Jackie Schmaeling had another great day at the plate" said head coach Rick Noren.

Game Two

Concordia took advantage of a couple of Saints' errors in the opening innings and built a 6-0 lead, highlighted by a two RBI double from Courtney Somers, after two.

Lauren Diuco brought home the first run for SMU in the third inning after reaching on an error by the first baseman, which resulted in Tessani Dixon scoring.

The Cavaliers scored three runs on three RBI singles, two coming the fifth and one in the sixth to take a commanding 9-1 lead over Saint Martin's.

Schmaeling homered for the second time that day and her fourth in the last three games, driving in Dettling and beginning the Saints' late-inning rally. Dixon drove in Hicks from third on a groundout to first before Paige Miller's RBI single to left cut the score to 9-5. Diuco capped-off the five run sixth inning with a RBI single to third base, scoring Paige Miller.

Concordia managed to fend off the Saints' comeback attempt with a two run top of the seventh, highlighted by a Luebbert home run. The Saints added one final run in the seventh off of a Hicks home run; however, ultimately fell 11-7.

Jessica O'Toole (1-1) picked up the loss after pitching 1.2 innings, giving up six runs all unearned on five hits and striking out two. L. Miller pitched the next three innings, only allowing two runs before Lauren Maley relieved 1.1 innings and Nelson finished off the final three outs.

"We just dug too big of hole for us in the second game" said Noren. "Our defense is usually pretty good but we struggled today. Not being able to practice outside is starting to show in our gameplay. We look forward to our pitchers getting more sharp tomorrow".

Up Next: The Saints remain at home with a doubleheader against Western Oregon on the following day. First pitch is scheduled for noon at SMU Softball field.
