LACEY, Wash. - The 2017 season for Saints Softball finally came to an end on their home field after falling to Central Washington 5-4 in the GNAC Tournament.
Central Washington (34-14) jumped out to the early lead, scoring a run in the first inning on a RBI double from Campbell before plating another in the third on a RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.Â
The Wildcats capped off their five straight runs with a three run fourth inning, highlighted by a RBI single and two runs scoring on a double to left center, extending their lead to 5-0 after four.
The Saints (25-19) were provided with a much needed spark from senior
Mary Dettling, who drove in
Lauren Diuco with a single to second base in the fifth inning.
Saint Martin's down to their final three outs, put together a rally attempt, after
Alyssa Slate and
Lindsay Miller reached on a single and a walk respectively. Diuco drove in Slate after a single and throwing error by the Wildcats, cut the score to 5-2. A four-pitch walk to Dettling, loaded the bases for
Jackie Schmaeling. Schmaeling capitalized on the opportunity with single to left field, plating both Diuco and L. Miller and put the tying run on second.
However, the Wildcats worked out of the jam with three straight groundball outs and secured the 5-4 victory, ending the Saints' campaign.
Kim Nelson (12-10) picked up the loss after throwing all six innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits in only 86 pitches.
"Although it was a tough way to end the season, it was great to see the seniors have good days and lead a strong comeback in the seventh inning." said head coach
Rick Noren.
