Saints Win 3-1 Over Concordia Behind Mitchell's 25 Kills

LACEY, Wash. - Fueled by a career-high 25 kills for Rebecca Mitchell and Megan Vernoy tying the single game four set service ace record at seven, the Saints upended Concordia 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) in front of a rowdy Marcus Pavilion crowd.

The Saints (6-4, 1-1 GNAC) stormed out to an early 13-5 lead in the first set over Concordia (6-3, 1-1) backed up kills from Nicolette Nesbitt, Emily Gooding and company. The Cavaliers rallied behind a 6-0 run later in the set to draw within one point of the Saints lead and later tied the score on three different occasions. With the set knotted at 22-22 a piece, Gooding and Nesbitt provided the final blow and sealed the 25-23 victory.

 Concordia gained the early advantage in the second set, taking a 13-8 lead. The Saints battled back with kills from Rachel Gondrezick, Mitchell and a service ace from Nesbitt to tie the set at 15-15. CU used a 4-0 run to jumpstart their offense and finish the set out with a victory 25-22 to even the match.

Concordia held the slight lead in the early goings of the third set, 11-8, before kills from Mitchell sparked a 6-1 run for SMU, highlighted by kills from Gondrezick, Vernoy and Gooding. Leading 18-16, Saint Martin's rattled off four straight points, including three straight kills from Mitchell to take command of the set and the eventual 25-20 victory. 

In the fourth and final set, Rebecca once again lead the Saints by delivering with four kills in the first five Saints' points. After a service error by Concordia tied the set at 9-9, Vernoy gave the Saints the lead with three straight service aces. Mitchell connected on three more balls for kills to go along with a service for Nesbitt to keep the Saints ahead 18-15. After a kill for Concordia brought the Cavaliers to within two, 18-16, the Saints closed out the match on a 7-2 run, capped off by two more Vernoy aces and two kills from Gondrezick. The Saints 3-1 victory over Concordia was the first in program history after the Saints had dropped the first seven meetings.

Setting a new career-high for the second time this season, Rebecca Mitchell finished the match with 25 kills on 50 total attacks along with an attacking percentage of .380 and 14 digs. Megan Vernoy tied the school record for most service aces in a four set match with seven, to go along with her seven kills and five blocks. Emily Gooding delivered an efficient performance, with 11 kills on 18 total attacks with a .444 attacking percentage. Kamille Langford led the match with seven assisted blocks and one solo block. Nicolette Nesbitt finsihed with 45 assists and 11 digs, while Hannah Neumann led the team with 20 digs.

The Saints travel to the state of Alaska for two matches, first with the University of Alaska Anchorage before traveling to University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Anchorage match is scheduled to start September 21 at 8:00 p.m.
