LACEY, Wash. - The Saints were defeated for the first time on their home court in the 2017 season after falling to Point Loma (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) in straight sets, snapping their four-game winning streak.
Only the second loss in tournament play under head coach
Jon Killingbeck, the Saints (4-2) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the second set on kills from
Brooklynn Tacke and
Rebecca Mitchell. Later in the set, the Sea Lions (1-5) used an 9-2 run to claim their first lead of the set at 17-15. The Saints responded with a 4-0 run to gain the edge 22-20 before Point Loma ended the set on a 5-0 run to claim the set.
Up 2-0 in sets, the Sea Lions established an earlier lead, one that would never falter. The Saints chipped away at the score, cutting the Sea Lions' lead to one multiple times before Point Loma broke away later in the set and ended the match on a Saints' attack error.
"Point Loma played a very good game," said head coach
Jon Killingbeck. "We had some good parts but our overall discipline needs to be better."
Mitchell led all Saints with 12 kills, followed by
Emily Gooding (6) and
Megan Vernoy (5). Gooding and
Courtney Misner each recorded one ace while Tacke,
Rachel Gondrezick and Gooding combined for six blocks.
Nicolette Nesbitt managed 27 assists with Misner leading the team with 17 digs.
The Saints will wrap up the West Region Volleyball Showcase with two matches on Saturday. First showing is at 10:30 a.m. against Notre Dame de Namur and SMU will wrap up against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m.
