LACEY, Wash. – The blocking and consistent offensive pressure by the Wildcats was too much for the Saints to handle at home, dropping in straight sets, 25-22, 25-13, 25-18.
The Saints and Wildcats traded blows in the first set, with Central managing to just come out on top in the final points. The momentum switched quickly to the Wildcats, as the Saints had no answer to get around the 11 blocks by CWU, and SMU's offense was unable to find its grove for the rest of the match.
To begin the night, the Saints jumped out to an early 9-3 lead, highlighted by back-to-back aces by
Courtney Misner. The Wildcats called a timeout, and out of the break, responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead. The set bounced back and forth until a late 6-1 run by Central was enough to edge out the Saints 25-22.
The second set quickly favored the Wildcats as they opened on a 15-3 run. The Saints offense managed to gain some traction late in the set with kills by
Megan Vernoy and
Rachel Gondrezick; however, Central took the set 25-13.
In the final set, the Saints once again held an early lead at 6-3, but a 10-2 run by the Wildcats shifted the momentum back to them. The large run by Central would be too much for the Saints to overcome and the Wildcats swept the match with a score of 25-18.
Ililani Kamaka led the team with 10 kills by Gondrezick and Vernoy added nine kills each. Bartlett finished the match with 19 assists while also collecting 13 digs. Misner led the team with 18 digs and Gondrezick added three more aces to her total.
