BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Saints erased a 14-point deficit off the board as their offense came alive with a 19-point third quarter. However, the University of Mary was able to regain control of the game and dominated SMU in the final quarter en route to a 62-47 final.
The Saints wrapped up play in the Lynda Goodrich Classic, hosted by Western Washington, with a loss to University of Mary in their first ever meeting between the two schools.
Makenna Schultz and
Saniah Simpson-Patu scored nearly two-thirds of the offense for the Saints, combining for 28 points. Saint Martin's was unable to find their stroke from deep, connecting on only 2-of-16 attempts. Schultz was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 15.5 points per game and 4.0 steals per game.
Mary jumped on the Saints early, opening the game on a 17-5 run over the first seven minutes of the game. Back-to-back layups by Simpson and a jumper from
Claire Dingus helped trim the lead down to six before a closing 3-pointer by Mary closed out the 20-11 first quarter.
The second quarter was an offensive draught for the Saints, scoring only four points, and not hitting a field goal for nearly 11 minutes straight. From Dingus' jumper with 1:18 left in the first to Schultz's layup with 22 seconds left in the half. Mary was unable to get much offense going either, as the Saints limited them to only seven points in the second quarter. Neither team scored for 6:44 minutes in the second quarter.
Out of the break, with Mary leading 27-15, the Saints did not long take long to score. Schultz scored on a layup and then knocked down a pair of free throws. Simpson and Russ made three more free throws to open the third quarter on a 7-0 run for the Saints. The run stretched all the way to 15-5 and ended with a game-tying 3-pointer by
Rebekah Baugh, with 3:16 left in the quarter. Mary managed to regain the lead in the closing minutes of the quarter, and entered the final quarter leading 39-34.
The fourth and final quarter went all Mary's way, outscoring the Saints 22-13. The Saints did manage to tie the game once again at 41-41 on another 3-pointer, this time from Schultz with 7:20 remaining. For the next minutes, University of Mary outpaced SMU 20-3 to secure the 62-47 victory.
Schultz led the Saints in scoring with 15 points, while Simpson managed 13 points; however, the two leading scorers combined for only 8-of-33 shooting. Dingus put together seven points and nine rebounds, leading the team, while five different Saints had two or more points.
For the game, SMU shot 15-for-67 (22.4 percent) from the field, 2-for-17 (11.8 percent) beyond the arc, and 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) at the free throw line. Saint Martin's recorded 38 rebounds, five assists on eight turnovers, while scoring 22 points in the paint, and eight off the bench.
