Saints Earn Double-Digit Road Victory Over Alaska–
Jayla Russ put together one of her best games of the season, 14 points and eight rebounds, to help the Saints power past Alaska, 70-59, on the road for a GNAC victory. Assisted by
Saniah Simpson-Patu and
Makenna Schultz, who both scored 16 points, the Saints (7-18, 3-14) outscored Alaska (4-19, 0-17) every quarter, ending with an 11 point victory, and marking a sweep of the season series for SMU.
Victor and Schultz Combine For 39 points In Loss To No. 4 Alaska Anchorage – The Saints responded from an early deficit to trim the score to four in the second quarter, before No. 4 Alaska Anchorage opened up the game on a 28-6 run, en route to a 95-60 victory over Saint Martin's on Saturday night. The Saints (7-19, 3-15) were led by sophomores
Makenna Schultz and
Mercedes Victor who combined for 39 points against the fourth-ranked Seawolves (24-2, 17-1). UAA controlled the boards, outrebounding the Saints by 14 to establish a 49.3 shooting percentage from the floor against the Saints' defense.
Makenna Schultz Named GNAC Player of the Week – Schultz had one of the best scoring weeks any player has had in the GNAC this season, going off for 33 points against the conference's best defense in Seattle Pacific. Schultz scored 26 second half points while knocking down 6-of-7 shots beyond the arc versus the Falcons and was the first Saint to reach the 30-point mark since Jan. 5, 2016. She did not cool off in the road trip to Montana, adding 19 points and three more 3-pointers, along with three assists. She finished the week averaging 26.0 ppg, 2.0 apg, 66.7 percent from the field, and a staggering 69.2 percent beyond the arc. The award marked the first for Schultz in her career.
Saints Lose Centerpiece Of Program – Senior
Elin Johansson, suffered an injury in the win over Alaska, representing a major loss to the Saints. She ranked third in scoring (14.9), third in field goal percentage (51.3), fifth in minutes played (31.3), eighth in blocked shots (0.8), 10th in defensive rebounding (4.4), 12th in rebounding (6.5), and 13th in offensive rebounding (2.1) at the time of her loss.
Simpson-Patu Rises As One Of The Best In GNAC– One of the top freshman in the conference and country, Simpson-Patu rose up on the GNAC Leaderboard. She began the conference season with 16-points, seven rebounds and two assists, in 29 minutes against Western Oregon. Leading the Saints over Concordia, Simpson-Patu scored a career-high 23 points, along with six rebounds, four assists on 9-for-15 shooting. She continued her run with a 21-point, and career-high 14-rebounds, for her first collegiate double-double against Oklahoma Christian and seven points and nine rebounds against MSUB. Simpson-Patu hit the 20-point mark for the third time with 21 points against Simon Fraser, before setting a new career-high in points with 27 against Alaska. Simpson-Patu hit the 30-point mark against Central Washington, ending with 33 points and eight rebounds. She now ranks sixth in scoring (14.4), fourth in defensive rebounding (4.8) tenth in rebounding (6.3), and eighth in minutes played (31.0).
Schultz, Developing Into A Star – Sophomore
Makenna Schultz is finding her way, inside a competitive GNAC, after scoring a then career-high 20 points against Western Oregon. She shot 8-for-13 from the field with two 3-pointers along with setting a career-high in rebounds with eight. Schultz eclipsed the double-digit scoring average with a 14-point performance at Seattle Pacific, along with six rebounds. She was once again a spark off the bench against MSUB with 15 points and six rebounds. She earned a spot in the starting lineup and reward
Christy Martin with a 13-point, 3-steal performance against CWU and a new career-high 22 points versus NNU. Schultz quickly set a new career-high in points with 33 against SPU en route to her first GNAC Player of the Week Award. Schultz is now third on the team in scoring at 12.8 ppg, which ranks 13th in conference, along with 2.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, and 1.1 spg.
Makenna Schultz Named Saint of the Month – Every month Saint Martin's selects one male and female athlete as Saint of the Month. Schultz, after dominating opponents in the month of January and proving to be one of the best scorers in the conference, has earned the Saint of the Month award. The award marks her first of the collegiate career.
Concordia Preview – Saint Martin's defeated Concordia in their first meeting of the season, 74-65, in December. The Nanooks are 13-13 on the season and 7-11 in conference and are currently on a two game losing streak. Leading the way is guard Danielle Hartzog at 15.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg and 2.2 apg, and double-double machine Bailey Cartwright (13.7 ppg, 10.8 rpg). Cartwright has recorded 16 double-doubles in the Cavaliers' 26 games. Kizzah Maltezo and Keesha Sarman add to Concordia's outside scoring at 11.0 and 8.3 ppg. Sarman leads the conference at 5.2 apg and is second on the team in rebounding at 6.2 per game. Concordia has outscored their opponents 68.5 to 65.3 while collecting 41.7 rpg, 13.1 apg on 16.5 turnovers per game, 8.1 steals per game and 3.9 blocks per game. The Cavaliers are shooting 38.4 percent from the floor, 30.8 percent beyond the arc and 69.5 percent at the free throw line.

Western Oregon Preview – Western Oregon took the first meeting with the Saints, back at the start of December, to a tune of 72-66. Since then, the Wolves sit one game out of the GNAC Championships with a 7-11 record in conference and 11-13 overall. Savannah Heugly leads the team in scoring at 11.4 ppg and rebounding at 5.9 per game. Snook's 10.0 ppg, along with 4.3 rpg and 2.7 apg, make the senior guard a tough threat to stop. Sydney Azorr adds 10.5 ppg and 4.4 rpg while Keyonna Jones is fourth in scoring at 6.7 ppg. The Wolves have been outscored by their opponents 68.2 to 65.7 per contest while recording 40.3 rpg, and 11.2 apg on 16.0 turnovers per game. WOU is averaging 8.0 steals per contest and 2.9 blocks per game. Western Oregon is shooting 37.1 percent from the field, 27.1 percent beyond the arc, and 79.5 percent at the free throw line.

GNAC Recap – Alaska Anchorage once again handled business, winning both games and improved to 17-1 in GNAC and 24-2 overall. Northwest Nazarene remains close behind in second place at 16-2 in GNAC. Seattle Pacific opened up a two-game lead for the third seed after splitting last week, going to 13-5 in conference action. Montana State Billings took over sole position of fourth after splitting as well, now sitting at 11-7 in GNAC. Central Washington has hit a rough patch, losing four straight games and falling to fifth in the conference standings; however, they sealed their bid the GNAC Championships. Coming into the final weekend, four teams eye to jump into the final spot open for the GNAC Championships. Western Washington holds a one-game lead at 8-10 over Concordia, Simon Fraser and Western Oregon, all at 7-11. Saint Martin's and Alaska round out the standings at 3-15, and 0-18 respectively.
