PORTLAND, Ore. – Lauren Maley leads the Saints to a 4-0 victory over Eastern Oregon with a complete game shutout, the first of the season for Maley, and second shutout for Saint Martin's.
The Saints (5-6) finished a perfect day at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Concordia, with their 4-0 victory over NAIA opponent Eastern Oregon. The Saints scored one run in the second on an error, followed by three insurance runs in the seventh to clinch the Saints back-to-back wins.
Devyn Connolly reached base on a fielding error to start the second inning. She later came around to score after
Alyssa French reached on another fielding error by Eastern Oregon.
The Saints' 1-0 lead held until the seventh inning, when
Nicki DeHan scored on a double by Julia Lopez. Lopez was lifted for a pinch runner in
Lauren Diuco, who scored on an error by Eastern Oregon.
Macy Uyehara, for the second time that day, doubled to left center, scoring the final run of the inning in
Lindsay Miller to put Saint Martin's on top 4-0.
In the final inning, Maley gave up a double to lead-off, before shutting down the game on a line out, ground out, and strike out looking to seal the victory.
Maley (2-4) picked up the victory after only allowing three hits, no runs, no walks, and six strikeouts over seven. In 24 batters faced, Maley forced 10 fly outs and four ground outs.
The Saints collected four runs, only one earned, on five hits, with two RBIs. L. Miller was the only Saint to record two hits in the game.
"Maley pitched a great game for a shut out," said head coach
Jim Peterson. "Macy (Uyehara) had another key hit and French had a nice diving catch in right, while
Lindsay Miller made a spectacular catch in left field over the fence to rob a home run. The Team played with really good energy today, resulting in two victories."
