Saints End Season On High Note With Win Over Western Oregon

LACEY, Wash. – In the final game of the season for the Women's Basketball team, the Saints sent the three seniors, Hannah Reynolds, Lauren Lindley and Elin Johansson, out on a high note with a 73-66 victory over Western Oregon.
 
Makenna Schultz and Mercedes Victor combined for 37 points and nine rebounds, as the Saints (8-20, 4-16) outpaced the Wolves (11-15, 7-13) in the final fourth quarter to clinch a season-ending victory, and marking a three-win improvement from last year.
 
The Saints jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on a baskets by Saniah Simpson-Patu and Victor. The Wolves quickly took the lead before field goals by Victor put SMU back on top. Both sides traded baskets down the stretch of the first quarter, with Western Oregon pulling ahead 22-21 after one.
 
Saint Martin's rattled off five straight points to open the quarter, and held WOU to without a field goal for the first three minutes of action. The Saints run continued, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Schultz, as the Saints' lead stretched to eight following the 14-5 run. Saint Martin's hit double-digits leads before heading to the locker room at halftime, leading 39-32.
 
Western Oregon used the entire third quarter to slowly chip away at the Saints' lead. Despite baskets by Victor, including a 3-pointer, and Jayla Russ, the Wolves managed to tie the game at 47-47 heading into the final quarter.
 
The Wolves took the first lead since the first quarter on and-one play, putting WOU up 52-50 with 8:15 left. The Saints rallied as a team, with five Saints scoring in the 19-7 run that closed out the game. Saint Martin's clinched their third victory at home in the conference season and ended the 2017-18 campaign on a winning note.
 
Schultz led the way with 19 points off the bench on 5-for-11 shooting, including a perfect 7-for-7 shooting at the line. Victor led all starters with 18 points and led the team with seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Simpson-Patu ended with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Jayla Russ scored 12 poitns and grabbed six boards.
 
The Saints shot 24-for-60 (40.0 percent) from the floor, 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) beyond the arc, and 21-for-31 (67.7 percent) at the free throw line. SMU collected 39 rebounds, eight assists, on only eight turnovers, along with five steals and one block.
