Late Home Run Powers UC San Diego Past Saint Martin's

LAS VEGAS – A late sixth inning two-run home run lifted the UC San Diego Titans over the Saints, 3-2, at the final day of the Desert Stinger.

The Saints (0-4) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Tessani Dixon connected on the first pitch, with a solo shot to center field. However, the Titans responded with one out two-run home run to escape with a 3-2 victory.

Saint Martin's got on the board first in the second inning. Three straight singles by Alyssa French, Sabrina Hicks and Nicki DeHan set the table for Macy Uyehara. Uyehara drew the walk and the Saints went up 1-0. The Titans tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI ground out.

Lauren Maley got the start for the Saints, and along with Robyn Wampler for UC San Diego, and neither offense was able to generate much. Outside of the Saints' bases loaded opportunity in the second and UC San Diego's runners in scoring position in the third, both sides struggled to string together hits.

Dixon, on the first pitch of the inning, squared up a ball and sent a solo blast to center field, her second home run of the season and second RBI of the year. The lead did not last long though, as UC San Diego capitalized on a lead-off walk with the go-ahead two-run home run with out in the bottom of the sixth.

"We played another good game against a quality opponent," said head coach Jim Peterson. "We are putting ourselves in positions to win games. We are looking for more timely offensive production."

The Saints collected seven hits, led by French who went 2-for-2. Lauren Diuco and Devyn Connolly each recorded one hit at the top of the lineup, while the 5-6-7-8 hitters for SMU managed all five other hits.

Laurent Maley (0-3) picked up the loss after going a strong 6.0 innings, allowing three runs, two earned on five hits. Maley gave up one walk, struck out none and forced seven fly outs, nine ground outs, in 23 batters faced.

The Saints quickly turn around to face Hawaii Hilo at 2:00 p.m. for their final game of the Desert Stinger. Live stats of the game are available on smusaints.com.
