BILLINGS, Mont. – Home runs by
Devyn Connolly and
Tessani Dixon fueled the Saints in the first game before Montana State Billings answered back with 13 runs to split the opening doubleheader on Saturday.
Connolly and Dixon both hit home runs to center field, picking up a combined three RBIs while
Kim Nelson worked nearly a complete game to earn the victory. The Yellowjackets (16-18, 6-7) used three large innings in the second game to capitalize on the Saints (20-15, 10-8) and secure the doubleheader split.
The Saints got on the board first in the second inning on a triple down the right field line by
Sabrina Hicks, scoring
Emily Baca. In the next inning,
Devyn Connolly added two more runs for the Saints with her second home run of the season. A two-run blast to center field, plating
Regan Byrd and putting Saint Martin's up 3-0.
An insurance run came in the sixth inning in the form of a solo home run by
Tessani Dixon, her team leading fifth of the year.
The Yellowjackets struggled to find any rhythm against the Saints' starter,
Kim Nelson, who started the game with five scoreless innings. Nelson worked out of a jam with runners on second and third and one out in the second inning with a foul out and ground out.
However, in the sixth inning, MSUB managed to score their first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. In the final inning, the Yellowjackets added a second run on a double and single.
Lauren Maley came in the came to earn her second save of the season with a fielder's choice and strikeout. Nelson (7-4) went 6.1 innings, earning her seventh win of the season with two runs, on six hits.
The second game of the doubleheader did not go the Saints way, with Montana State using two four-run innings and a walk-off three home run to clinch a 13-5 victory in five innings. Connolly picked up another RBI in the first inning, with
Lindsay Miller driving home Hicks on a double in the second.
Regan Byrd brought home both
Paige Miller and and
Nicki DeHan in the fourth on a single to right.
Lauren Maley (13-10) got the start and loss after throwing 2.1 innings, allowing five earned runs. L. Miller threw the final 2.1 innings and gave up three earned runs.
