SMU Sweeps Cavs, Splits With Western Oregon In Home Doubleheaders – Behind
Kim Nelson' complete game and
Lindsay Miller and
Lauren Maley's combined one-run game, the Saints extended their win streak to six games and clinched the season series with Concordia after 7-3 and 2-1 victories.
Kylie Lopez and
Regan Byrd supplied five RBIs to support
Kim Nelson (5-3) who returned to throw a complete game, giving up three runs on 10 hits while punching out three Cavs. In the second game, Concordia took an early 1-0 before a RBI extra base hits by
Lauren Diuco and
Nicki DeHan lifted the Saints to a 2-1 victory.
Western Oregon snapped the Saints' six game win streak in the first bill of the doubleheader, before
Lauren Maley pitched a one-run while the offense supplied her with nine runs to split the doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints bats struggled to get anything going in the first game, only collecting two hits, while Western Oregon jumped out to an early lead. In the second game, Saint Martin's responded with three first innings runs, and won the game on a walk-off single by
Sabrina Hicks, followed by a throwing error to win 9-1.
Saints Named GNAC Team Of The Week – The Saints' softball team traveled to California in March to compete in the Tournament of Champions and came back with a 5-1 record, their best finish since 2015. Due to that, the GNAC office announced Monday the Saints were the Red Lion GNAC Team of the Week. Behind strong pitching from All-Tournament selections
Lauren Maley and
Lindsay Miller, the Saints defeated regional powerhouses like Azusa Pacific and Humboldt State, along with victories over Chaminade, San Francisco State and Dominican.
Tessani Dixon (.524 avg, 1 HR, 8 RBI) along with
Nicki DeHan (.375 avg, 5 RBI) and Miller (.400 avg, 7 runs) fueled the Saints' offense for the weekend.
Lights Out Pitching Staff – The Saints are second in the GNAC in earned run average. SMU has posted a 3.17 team ERA and are led by their two starters
Lauren Maley and
Kim Nelson, who have posted 2.51 and 3.44 ERAs respectively. Maley and Nelson rank third and 11th in the GNAC in ERA with teammate
Lindsay Miller ranks seventh at 3.26 ERA.
Nelson Controls The Plate – In over 63 innings of work,
Kim Nelson has only allowed seven walks. Nelson currently is posting a 2.57 K/BB ratio, striking out 18 batters this season, and leads for least amount of walks given up in the GNAC.
Diuco Picks Up Right Where She Left Off – After being named to the 2017 GNAC first team as an unanimous selection last year, Diuco hit .438 in the Desert Stinger. Collecting 27 hits in 89 at-bats, Diuco also caused havoc in the base paths, going 13-for-13 in stolen base opportunities, raising her stolen base percentage to 92.1 percent in her career.
Lindsay Miller Chasing Record Books – Entering the year, Miller was only 33 hits away from 200 in her career. Only six Saints have reached the 200-hit mark. Miller achieved the milestone with an infield base hit during her final at-bat versus Western Oregon on March 31. She now eyes the sixth overall in the record book, 16 hits away from Mary Detting.
Kim Nelson Closing In On History – Nelson is eyeing two milestones this season, the 500-inning mark and 50-win mark. Only one Saint has reached the 500-innings and 50 win mark in their career (Sam Munger). Nelson entered the season with 36 wins and 420.1 innings pitched. So far, Nelson has won five games, and has pitched 63.0 innings meaning she is 9 wins and 15.2 innings away from both milestones.
Tessani Dixon Providing The Power In The Middle Of The Order – Hitting in the middle of the order, Dixon provided some much need quality at-bats. For the season, Dixon is hitting .333 with four home runs and 23 RBIs, and is tied for fourth in the GNAC in RBIs, and tied for ninth in home runs.
Nicki DeHan's Bat On Fire At Hot Corner – Taking over as the starting third baseman this season, DeHan has proved to be one of the best hitters for the Saints this season. Hitting .333 on the year with a team's second best 14 RBIs, DeHan has provided clutch hits, including a game-winning extra inning base hit over Regional Powerhouse Humboldt State.
