Season Preview – The Saints are fresh off a record setting season, breaking the school record for wins in a single season with nine. SMU will have to replace All-Conference player Rebecca Mitchell; however, seniors Rachel Gondrezick and Megan Vernoy bring experience to the table.
Gondrezick was second on the team last year in points (304.5), and kills (279) while playing in all 103 sets. Vernoy follows up right behind her in both categories with 252.2 points and 215 kills while also seeing action in every set last season.
Joining Gondrezick and Vernoy is fellow senior Courtney Misner in the back line, who was third in digs at 258 and led the team with 22 service aces. Returning from last year's squad is also sophomore Emily Gooding (77 sets, 115 kills), and juniors Ililani Kamaka (23 sets, 18 kills) and Jordan Keane (41 sets, 165 assists).
Fans can expect to see many new faces on the court this year for SMU, with eight new players being added to the roster. Transfer senior Molly Cichosz joins Saint Martin's after tallying over 300 kills her sophomore year at Loyola University Maryland. The Saints' roster includes seven freshman in Annika Briggs (Spokane, Wash.), Kylie Alos (Mililani, Hawaii), Bridgette Bourgouin (Chino Hills, Calif.), Kallie Langford (Kaneohe, Hawaii), Alyssa Bartlett (Salida, Calif.), Shannen Sakai (Pearl City, Hawaii), and Hannah McKee (Highland, Calif.).
The Saints begin the season on the road with two tournaments, first traveling to Hawaii with play starting 8/23 against Chaminade. SMU travels to California for the NCAA Division-II West Region Volleyball Showcase, with four matches in two days.
The home opener for Saint Martin's is scheduled for September 13 at 7:00 p.m. against Concordia, inside Marcus Pavilion on the newly named TwinStar court.
Some records to watch this season include Gondrezick on the all-time kills list. She enters the season at 540 kills and 593.5 points, and is only 34 kills and 144 points away from cracking the top ten in school history. Vernoy also will have an opportunity to etch her name in the history books as she is 135 kills away from making the top ten as well.
Saint Martin's was voted 11th in the GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, headlined by fifth-ranked Western Washington and Central Washington. 19th ranked Northwest Nazarene was voted tied for fourth in the conference.
