Hicks Goes Deep Twice As Saints Win Season Opener - Sabrina Hicks wasted no time to open up the 2019 season with a bang. The senior clubbed two home runs, a three run blast in the third, and a two run shot in the fifth to lift the Saints to a season-opening victory, 7-2, over Stanislaus State.

Saint Martin's opened the season on the road, in part of the Desert Stinger tournament, facing Stanislaus State, and Hicks and Lauren Diuco headlined the box score. The shortstop crushed two home runs, first going opposite field to right, and following it up with a slam to left. Hicks drove in six runs, including an insurance run in the seventh, which was plenty for the pitching staff. Lauren Maley and Brandi Schoessler (1-0) combined to quiet the Warriors' bats to only five hits and two runs.

Lopez's Grand Slam Fuels Comeback Victory - Trailing by eight runs, the Saints needed to make something happen in order to get back into their game with Colorado Christian. With a Kylie Lopez grand slam, Alyssa French three-run home run, another Lopez home run, and a Devyn Connolly home run, the Saints pulled off the explosive comeback to win 11-10.

Saint Martin's hit for the home run cycle, launching all four types of home runs in order to rally from eight runs down. Lopez got the action going with a grand slam in the third, and then in the same inning, French's three-run blast pulled SMU to within one run. The comeback continued in the sixth, as Lopez struck again, going this time for a two-run shot to put SMU on top. Connolly picked up the final blast to complete the cycle in the sixth, before French tacked on an important insurance run to cap off the inning. The Saints gave up two more runs in the seventh, but managed to strand the tying run at third to sweep the first day of the Desert Stinger.

Toros Hand Saints First Loss Of The Season - Trailing by seven runs, with only three outs remaining, the Saints nearly pulled off another miraculous comeback, scoring five runs, but left the tying and go ahead runs on base at the end. Cal State Dominguez Hills handed the Saints their first loss of the season with a 7-5 score to end the Desert Stinger.

Early power lifted Dominguez Hills to a 7-0 lead after the third inning, highlighted by home runs in the second and third innings. The home run in the third inning put the Toros on top by three, but it was only the beginning of the inning. CSUDH proceeded to score four more runs, capped off by a two RBI single, along with another RBI single and bases loaded walk.

Sabrina Hicks Named To Desert Stinger Classic All-Tournament Team – The senior started off her final campaign in style, hitting .636 with two home runs and seven RBIs in three games in Vegas. In 11 at-bats, Hicks collected a team-leading seven hits, 13 total bases, and five runs scored. Her two home runs and seven RBIs were tied with Kylie Lopez for the most on the team.

Saints Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll - Following their seventh consecutive winning season, and entering the second year under the helm of Jim Peterson, the Saints were voted sixth in the 2019 GNAC Preseason Conference poll. Saint Martin's earned the sixth seed in the highly competitive conference, finishing only one vote behind 2018 surprise team Simon Fraser. The conference looks to be a battle between the Nighthawks (61 votes), and the Wildcats (59) for the top spot. Western Oregon and Western Washington follow behind at third and fourth respectively. Montana State Billings and Concordia round out the bottom of the standings.

Season Preview - The Saints return a core of GNAC All-Conference selections from last season, including second team selection pitcher Lauren Maley. In 36 games, Maley went 16-14, with a 3.00 ERA and 52 strikeouts, all of which led her team. In the batter box, the Saints return second team outfielder Lauren Diuco, who hit .310 on the season, with 40 hits, and was a perfect 18-for-18 on the base paths.

Adding to the core is senior shortstop Sabrina Hicks and her .284 batting average, two home runs and 20 RBIs. Nicki DeHan returns at third base with an impressive .313 batting average, 18 RBIs and 40 hits.

Rounding out the returners for the Saints include senior Alyssa French, outfield, a trio of catchers in Kylie Lopez, Devyn Connolly, and Julia Lucas, along with outfielders, Regan Byrd, and Emery Norwood. In the circle, the Saints also return Jessica O'Toole.

Saint Martin's replaces four seniors, including first team All-Conference selection Lindsay Miller, along with Kim Nelson, Tessani Dixon, and Taylor Wolf.

Jim Peterson added seven new players, made up of four freshman and three transfers. Brandi Schoessler (Walla Walla CC), and Kimberlyn Tutt (Bellevue College) will add depth in the pitching staff, while Emily Thornton will play in the infield. The freshman class includes Kylee Vanderbout (Happy Valley, Oregon), Trinity Favela (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), Trinity Loeb (Happy Valley, Oregon), and Gianna Marchese (Seattle, Washington).
