Simon Fraser Silences Saints In Road Loss

BURNABY, Canada – The Saints had their offense rolling in the first quarter; however, Simon Fraser continued their hot streak and defended their home court, knocking off SMU 77-57 on Saturday night.

Makenna Schultz tied a career-high in rebounds with eight boards, to go along with her eight points in 37 minutes of action. Both Megan Nilsson and Claire Dingus reached double-figures in scoring at 12 and 10 respectively, but the efforts were not enough. Simon Fraser pulled away from the Saints in the second quarter and never looked back. SFU shot over 50 percent from the field, and at one point in the second half, was over 50 percent from beyond the arc. The hot shooting hands of the Clan lifted them past the Saints.

Bria Thames and Rebekah Baugh supplied the first eight points of the night, putting SMU on top 8-2 in the opening minutes. Simon Fraser managed to cut away at the lead until tying the game at 10-10 mark. Nilsson and Schultz stopped the 11-2 run with baskets of their own and the Saints regained the lead. However, by the end of the quarter, Simon Fraser had rallied for another run, this time a 9-2 break and held a 22-18 lead at the start of the second quarter.

The Saints and the Clan traded baskets throughout most of the second quarter until the 3:18 mark. Over the final three minutes, Simon Fraser scored 10 points to the Saints' two and expanded their lead to 42-28 at halftime.

The third quarter continued much like how the second ended with Simon Fraser outscoring the Saints 24-13. Twelve of the 13 Saints' points came inside the paint, and six different players managed to get into the scoring column in the quarter.

Saint Martin's used a 9-0 run at the end of the fourth quarter to outpace SFU 16-11 over the final ten minutes; however, Simon Fraser's lead was enough to absorb the run and secure the victory.

Nilsson led the way in the scoring department with 12 points, along with four rebounds and one steal. Dingus added 10 points and six rebounds, while Schultz ended with eight points and eight rebounds. Thames and Baugh combined for 15 points with eight and seven respectively.

Saint Martin's shot 22-for-63 (34.9 percent) from the field, 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) beyond the arc, and 9-for-21 (42.8 percent) at the free throw line. The Saints were outrebounded 40 to 34 but collected eight assists on only eight turnovers, along six steals and one block.

Saint Martin's returns home for their final two games inside Marcus Pavilion this year, starting with Alaska on Thursday. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
