PORTLAND, Ore. – Trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, the Saints mounted another comeback, highlighted by a three run home run by
Sabrina Hicks, and walk-off sac fly from
Kylie Lopez in the bottom of the seventh, to win 6-5.
After another rough first inning for the Saints, allowing four runs, the pitching turned around and quieted Simpson's bats. The Saints held Simpson to only one run over the next six innings, on two hits with four strikeouts. Hicks delivered the game-tying blow in the fourth, and later scored the game-winning run on Lopez's sac fly to center.
"We dug ourselves a big hole again and were able to come back," said head coach
Jim Peterson. "Sabrina had a big three run homer to help us in the come back and
Kylie Lopez had a game-winning RBI fly ball to win the game. Brandy (Schoessler) came in and pitched well in relief to help us close out the game."
The top of the first continued to be an issue for the Saints, after giving up two runs the day before, Simpson brought home four runs. Simpson scored the runs on five hits in the inning, three of which were singles, and two doubles.
Saint Martin's got a run back in the second inning when
Regan Byrd drove in Kylie Vanderbout on a RBI single to center field. Vanderbout reached on a one out double to left center.
After Simpson added another run in the fourth inning to make it 5-1, the Saints responded with force in the bottom of the fourth.
Trinity Favela did the first damage with her RBI single, scoring Byrd, which put runners on first and second for Hicks. The senior crushed an 0-1 pitch for her third home run of the season, a three run shot to tie the game at 5-5. All four runs for the Saints came after SMU began the inning with two strikeouts.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Saints up to bat. On a full count to lead-off hitter Hicks, she reached third base on a fielding error, putting the game-winning run just 60 feet away. Lopez was the next batter up, and she did not waste any time, swinging at the first pitch. Lopez drove a ball deep enough to center field to drive in Hicks and walk-off the game 6-5.
Lauren Maley got the start and went 3.2 innings, allowing all five runs, only four earned, on seven hits and three strikeouts.
Brandi Schoessler (4-0) pitched 3.1 no-hit innings out of relief, striking out three batters to earn the win.
The Saints conclude the Cavalier Classic with a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning with Corban at 1:30 p.m. followed by Northwest University at 3:45 p.m.
