MSUB Tosses No-Hitter In Doubleheader Split With Saints – The Saints split their opening doubleheader with Montana State Billings to start the GNAC season, outpacing MSUB 3-2 in the opening game, before the Yellowjackets and Alyssa Etheridge completed a no-hitter to stun the Saints 8-1.
French Delivers Walk-Off, Saints Take Two From MSUB - Lights out pitching from
Jessica O'Toole,
Lauren Maley, and
Brandi Schoessler, quieted the Yellowjackets to only two runs over 14 innings, including a shutout in the second game. In the first game, with the game winning runner on second, pinch hitter
Alyssa French delivered the clutch, walk-off double to right center to help the Saints sweep on the day, and clinch the series with Montana State Billings.
Schoessler picked up both wins on the day, improving her record to 7-1, which is second most wins in the GNAC. Behind her 6.1 innings of shutout work on the day, Schoessler struck out six batters, including the final three of the second game, and only allowed four hits. O'Toole was the opener in both tilts, going a combined 4.1 innings, while only giving up one hit. Maley worked to a tune of 3.1 innings, and also only allowed one hit. The Saints' offense only delivered five runs on the day; however, it was all that was need as the Saints improved to 9-7 overall, and took three out of four to open up the GNAC schedule.
Hicks To Another All-Tournament Team - Hicks was named to her second All-Tournament team of the season. Over the weekend, Hicks went 5-for-13 with two home runs, six RBIs, and five runs scored.
Sabrina Hicks Named To Desert Stinger Classic All-Tournament Team – The senior started off her final campaign in style, hitting .636 with two home runs and seven RBIs in three games in Vegas. In 11 at-bats, Hicks collected a team-leading seven hits, 13 total bases, and five runs scored. Her two home runs and seven RBIs were tied with
Kylie Lopez for the most on the team.
Racking Up The Ws –
Brandi Schoessler continues to be on the winning side of the record, as the transfer is second in GNAC in wins (7). Not only is Schoessler dominating her opponents, she also ranks among the best in the GNAC in most pitching categories including ERA (7th), Strikeouts (8th), Innings Pitched (7th), and Opposing Batting Avg (11th).
Saints Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll - Following their seventh consecutive winning season, and entering the second year under the helm of
Jim Peterson, the Saints were voted sixth in the 2019 GNAC Preseason Conference poll. Saint Martin's earned the sixth seed in the highly competitive conference, finishing only one vote behind 2018 surprise team Simon Fraser. The conference looks to be a battle between the Nighthawks (61 votes), and the Wildcats (59) for the top spot. Western Oregon and Western Washington follow behind at third and fourth respectively. Montana State Billings and Concordia round out the bottom of the standings.
Season Preview - The Saints return a core of GNAC All-Conference selections from last season, including second team selection pitcher
Lauren Maley. In 36 games, Maley went 16-14, with a 3.00 ERA and 52 strikeouts, all of which led her team. In the batter box, the Saints return second team outfielder
Lauren Diuco, who hit .310 on the season, with 40 hits, and was a perfect 18-for-18 on the base paths.
Adding to the core is senior shortstop
Sabrina Hicks and her .284 batting average, two home runs and 20 RBIs.
Nicki DeHan returns at third base with an impressive .313 batting average, 18 RBIs and 40 hits.
Rounding out the returners for the Saints include senior
Alyssa French, outfield, a trio of catchers in
Kylie Lopez,
Devyn Connolly, and
Julia Lucas, along with outfielders,
Regan Byrd, and
Emery Norwood. In the circle, the Saints also return
Jessica O'Toole.
Saint Martin's replaces four seniors, including first team All-Conference selection
Lindsay Miller, along with
Kim Nelson,
Tessani Dixon, and
Taylor Wolf.
