Vikings End Saints' Hot Streak

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Saints were rolling red-hot into Bellingham for a match-up of two of the top teams in the GNAC. However, Western Washington was able to defend their home turf and cool off the Saints with 9-1 and 12-5 results.

Sabrina Hicks continued to provide power in the middle of the order for the Saints, opening the second game with a three run home run. However, it was the Saints' pitching, which had been one of the best in the conference, come up short on the road. Western Washington managed 21 runs on 23 hits, including becoming the first team to get the better of Saints' ace Brandi Schoessler.

"It was a tough day for us defensively, offensively, and in the pitching circle," said head Jim Peterson. "In the second game, we took the lead but could not hold on as Western Washington's hitting was dominant today."

Western Washington quickly jumped on the Saints in the opening frame of the first game, scoring five runs. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam by Cylie Richards.

Saint Martin's scored their lone run in the top of the second when Emery Norwood singled down the left field line, bringing home Devyn Connolly. The Vikings added three more runs, including a two run home run in the bottom of the second, and ended the game with a run in the fifth.

In the second game, Hicks connected on her fifth home run of the season, driving a 1-2 pitch to left center. Trinity Favela and Norwood scored on the play for a 3-0 lead. By the end of the second inning, Western Washington had managed to tie the game at 3-3.

Favela broke the tie in the third inning with a sac fly, driving in Norwood once again. Alyssa French, coming off a two home run day yesterday, scored the fifth run of the game with her RBI single to right.

However, Western Washington, trailing 5-3, ended the game by scoring nine straight unanswered runs. After tying the game in the fifth, a three run home run gave them back the lead. The Vikings added four more runs in the sixth to clean up the doubleheader sweep.

Saint Martin's plays host to Western Oregon and Concordia next week to resume GNAC action.
