MONMOUTH, Ore. – In the final contest of the 2018-19 campaign for the Saints,
Claire Dingus,
Bria Thames, and
Megan Nilsson combined to form a 63-point, 31-rebound triple threat as the Saints rolled Western Oregon 82-58.
Thames completed one of the best games on the boards in Saint Martin's history, collecting 18 rebounds, and scored a double-double with 18 points. Nilsson scored a career-high 23 points to lead Saint Martin's in scoring, while Dingus capped off her impressive freshman season with a 22 point, nine rebound performance. Saint Martin's closed out the game with a 26-10 fourth quarter and pulled away for the 24 point victory.
Western Oregon claimed the first advantage of the game, opening the game on a 10-2 lead. However, the eight point lead was the Wolves' largest of the game. By the end of the first ten minutes, the Saints had pulled to within one point at 20-19. Thames and Dingus combined to score all 19 points.
The Saints collected their first lead of the game on the opening possession of the second quarter, as Nilsson scored her first points on a jumper. Both sides traded baskets and momentum throughout most of the second quarter; however, it was the Saints getting the edge before halftime. Saint Martin's closed out the quarter on an 11-2 run and secured the 38-31 at the break.
The Wolves and Saints continued to trade baskets in the third quarter until the Saints doubled their lead from six to 12 with field goals from Thames and Dingus. Western Oregon did not back away, and continued to attack at the score, trimming the lead down to 56-48 at the quarter break.
Saint Martin's caught fire in the fourth quarter and never looked back. SMU outscored the Wolves 10-4 in the first five minutes, but proceeded to end the game on a 16-6 run. The Saints found success down low, scoring 18 points in the paint.
Outside of Nilsson, Dingus, and Thames' 63 points,
Rebekah Baugh was the next leader in scoring with seven points. Baugh also added four boards and four assists, while
Jayla Russ and Mackenzie Kaech ended with four points each.
The Saints as whole shot the ball effective, going 34-for-61 (55.7 percent) from the field, 3-for-5 beyond the arc, and 11-for-17 (60.0 percent) at the free throw line. SMU collected 46 rebounds compared the Wolves' 21, while managing 18 assists on 11 turnovers, two steals and one block.
The win ends the 2018-19 season for the Saints, as they finished 7-21 overall and 5-15 in conference play.
