Cavaliers Blank Saints In Doubleheader

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Concordia dominated the Saints in both hitting and pitching, scoring 19 runs in the doubleheader, while shutting out the Saints on four hits. Concordia managed a 12-0 and 7-0 sweep of Saint Martin's at neutral site Portland State.

Over the course of 12 innings, Saint Martin's collected only four hits on the day, and left runners in the scoring position multiple ties. The bats never came alive, but Concordia's did. On the day, Concordia plated 19 runs on 24 hits, and scored at least one run in seven of the 12 innings. The two losses drop the Saints to .500 on the season at 12-12 and .500 in GNAC action at 5-5.

In the opening game, Concordia got on the board first with three runs. After a scoreless second, CU added another four in the third, two in the fourth, and finally three in the fifth. Saint Martin's left runners on second and third in first and a runner on second in the third inning. Nicki DeHan collected one of three hits on the day with a pinch hit single in the fifth.

In the second bill of action, the Cavaliers struck again early, this time with an RBI triple down the right field line. However, Brandi Schoessler managed to strand a runner on third before posting three straight shutout innings. However, despite the excellent start, Schoessler was outdueled by her counterpart Mackenzie Smith.

After a lead-off walk, Smith retired 10 of the next 12 batters she faced, and even caught a break on her only hit allowed. Devyn Connolly doubled to start the third; however, over ran the bag at second and was doubled up on the throw in from right field.

Concordia added two more runs in the fifth before breaking open the lead with a four run sixth inning. The Saints were unable to get anything going all game and fell 7-0.

Saint Martin's returns to Hillsboro for their next series, hosting Western Oregon on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
