Saints Pull Off Comeback Victory In Second Day of Tournament

TURLOCK, Calif. – To lead-off the second day of action at the Tournament of Champions, Kylie Vanderbout and Lauren Diuco delivered come from behind hits to pull off the 5-4 win over Chaminade.

The Saints took the first lead over Chaminade but quickly lost it to fall behind 4-2 entering the six. Vanderbout drove in the third run on a RBI single up the middle and set the stage for Diuco. The senior drove in the tying and game-winning run on a single through the right side to pull off the victory. In the second game, Sonoma State was able to hold on the Saints' offense and claim the 5-1 victory.

"The win over Chaminade was a good overall team win for us," said head coach Jim Peterson. "We were able to fight back and come up with a close victory at the end. We fell behind early against a good team in Sonoma State but at the end of the game, with the bases-loaded, we had an opportunity to get a clutch hit. Unfortunately, we came up short."

It wasn't until the fourth inning when the scoreless tie was broken, starting with a Vanderbout sac fly driving in Trinity Favela. Emery Norwood added to the score with her RBI single to third, making it a 2-0 ballgame.

Chaminade scored the next four runs of the game, with one in the bottom of the fourth and three in the third.

The Saints mounted another comeback victory, scoring the three runs they needed in the sixth to pull off the victory. Brandi Schoessler pitched the complete game for her 11th victory of the season.

In the second game, Sonoma State did not wait to gain a lead, scoring three runs in the opening frame. The Saints held them in check until the sixth when Sonoma State added two more insurance runs to extend their lead to 6-0.

Saint Martin's scored their lone run of the game in the seventh inning to break up the shutout. Nicki DeHan scored on a dropped pop out but the Saints left the bases loaded in the inning.

SMU wraps up tournament action with a game against Cal State San Marcos tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with live stats available on smusaints.com
