NAMPA, Idaho – The Saints fell behind early to Northwest Nazarene in the opening game, but mounted another signature comeback, scoring three in the seventh to pull off the 4-3 victory. However, Nighthawks ran away with game two with an 11 inning to cruise to the 11-3 doubleheader split.
Trailing by two runs, Kylie Vanderbout delivered the game-tying base hit, driving in both
Sabrina Hicks and
Nicki DeHan. Vanderbout later scored on a foul ball out by
Emily Thornton, and
Brandi Schoessler picked up win number 15 by closing the door in the seventh inning. Saint Martin's outscored NNU 3-0 in the second game outside of the bottom of the third. However, 11 runs is difficult to come back from as the Nighthawks forced a split.
The Saints opened the first game with a run in the first, scoring on an error, allowing
Trinity Favela to come in from third. Northwest Nazarene struck back in the third with two runs and added another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the seventh inning rally by the Saints as SMU secured their 18th victory of the season.
In the second game, Hicks drove in the first run of the game in the first inning, singling to second. Northwest Nazarene plated 11 runs in the third, highlighted by two bases clearing doubles.
Saint Martin's added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Favela, and another in the fifth on DeHan's double down the left field line. However, the game came to a close with the Saints' trailing by eight runs after five.
