Softball Celebrates Senior Day With Final Home Doubleheader – Four seniors,
Alyssa French,
Lauren Maley,
Sabrina Hicks, and
Lauren Diuco finished their home playing careers with two games against Central Washington. The Wildcats played spoiler and knocked off the Saints 6-1 and 5-3 in both ends.
Hicks rattled off five hits and two RBIs over the two games but the Saints' offense was never able to find the clutch hits when they needed them the most. Over the course of the two games, Saint Martin's left 18 runners on base, while only scoring four runs. Central Washington, one of the top GNAC's offenses, was only able to put up 11 runs; however, they were able to shut down most the Saints' rallies and opportunities to hold on for the wins.
Maley's Complete Game Helps Saints To Split – The Wildcats got the better of the Saints in the opener of the doubleheader, but the Saints bounced back behind a strong performance from
Lauren Maley. Maley's complete game, and nine runs of the support, fueled the Saints' 9-3 victory over the top team in the GNAC.
Central Washington took care of business in the first game of the doubleheader, 11-0, jumping on the Saints' errors and strung together hits. In the second game, Saint Martin's flipped the script and pounced on the Wildcats' errors. Highlighted by a five run fourth inning, the Saints had all the runs they needed for Maley, as the senior went for the complete game, allowing three runs on only seven hits.
Devyn Connolly Named To Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team – Over the course of the five games, Connolly went 8-for-14 at the plate. The catcher also drove in four runs, hit two doubles and scored once. The award marked the first All-Tournament team in Connolly's career.
Hicks To Another All-Tournament Team - Hicks was named to her second All-Tournament team of the season. Over the weekend, Hicks went 5-for-13 with two home runs, six RBIs, and five runs scored.
Sabrina Hicks Named To Desert Stinger Classic All-Tournament Team – The senior started off her final campaign in style, hitting .636 with two home runs and seven RBIs in three games in Vegas. In 11 at-bats, Hicks collected a team-leading seven hits, 13 total bases, and five runs scored. Her two home runs and seven RBIs were tied with
Kylie Lopez for the most on the team.
200 Hit Club – Against Simon Fraser,
Lauren Diuco joined an exclusive club, the 200-career hit club. Diuco became only the eighth player in SMU softball history to achieve the feat.
Hitting Streak – Over the nine games, sophomore
Devyn Connolly has recorded a season long hitting streak. Starting on March 23 against Concordia and ending on April 6 against Western Washington, Connolly has racked up 14 hits, including a three hit performance against Western Oregon. Four of the eight games had been multi-hit games.
Racking Up The Ws –
Brandi Schoessler continues to be on the winning side of the record, as the transfer is second in GNAC in wins (15). Not only is Schoessler dominating her opponents, she also ranks among the best in the GNAC in most pitching categories including ERA (11th), Strikeouts (5th), Innings Pitched (3rd), and Opposing Batting Avg (12th).
Triple Crown Threat –
Sabrina Hicks leads the Saints in most offensive categories including home runs, and RBIs. Hicks also ranks among the best in the GNAC in those stats at sixth in home runs, and second in RBIs. Hicks' seven home runs are tied for eighth most in a single season in program history.
All-Conference All Career –
Lauren Diuco entered the season as a three time All-Conference selection and looks to be on track for her fourth straight selection. The senior is currently slashing .370, which is second on team and 10th in the GNAC, and leads the team with 14 stolen bases. Diuco is also the all-time stolen base leader in program history, with 54 stolen bags.
Providing the Power –
Sabrina Hicks,
Kylie Lopez, and
Alyssa French have been at the center of the Saints' run support all season. The three have combined for 13 of the 16 home runs hit by the Saints, and 80 of the 177 RBIs.
Saints Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll - Following their seventh consecutive winning season, and entering the second year under the helm of
Jim Peterson, the Saints were voted sixth in the 2019 GNAC Preseason Conference poll. Saint Martin's earned the sixth seed in the highly competitive conference, finishing only one vote behind 2018 surprise team Simon Fraser. The conference looks to be a battle between the Nighthawks (61 votes), and the Wildcats (59) for the top spot. Western Oregon and Western Washington follow behind at third and fourth respectively. Montana State Billings and Concordia round out the bottom of the standings.
Season Preview - The Saints return a core of GNAC All-Conference selections from last season, including second team selection pitcher
Lauren Maley. In 36 games, Maley went 16-14, with a 3.00 ERA and 52 strikeouts, all of which led her team. In the batter box, the Saints return second team outfielder
Lauren Diuco, who hit .310 on the season, with 40 hits, and was a perfect 18-for-18 on the base paths.
Adding to the core is senior shortstop
Sabrina Hicks and her .284 batting average, two home runs and 20 RBIs.
Nicki DeHan returns at third base with an impressive .313 batting average, 18 RBIs and 40 hits.
Rounding out the returners for the Saints include senior
Alyssa French, outfield, a trio of catchers in
Kylie Lopez,
Devyn Connolly, and
Julia Lucas, along with outfielders,
Regan Byrd, and
Emery Norwood. In the circle, the Saints also return
Jessica O'Toole.
Saint Martin's replaces four seniors, including first team All-Conference selection
Lindsay Miller, along with
Kim Nelson,
Tessani Dixon, and
Taylor Wolf.
Jim Peterson added seven new players, made up of four freshman and three transfers.
Brandi Schoessler (Walla Walla CC), and
Kimberlyn Tutt (Bellevue College) will add depth in the pitching staff, while
Emily Thornton will play in the infield. The freshman class includes
Kylee Vanderbout (Happy Valley, Oregon),
Trinity Favela (Ewa Beach, Hawaii),
Trinity Loeb (Happy Valley, Oregon), and
Gianna Marchese (Seattle, Washington).
