IRVINE, Calif. – Two big innings by Concordia Irvine proved to be the difference maker in the Saints' doubleheader loss on Saturday, 14-3 and 6-0.
The opening game did not go the way the Saints wanted it go, falling in five innings. Concordia Irvine (6-1) opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Saint Martin's (5-4) had an opportunity to strike right back, loading the bases in the next half inning, but left all three on base.
The Eagles opened up the game in the bottom of third, scoring 10 runs, and then added another three in the fourth. The Saints got on the board in the fifth inning when
Megan Convery delivered a bases-clearing triple, collecting her first three collegiate RBIs of her career.
In the second game,
Brandi Schoessler (3-2) was able to keep the Eagles' bats quiet through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints committed two errors which allowed the Eagles to jump on the board big. Concordia scored five of their six runs of the game in the frame, and later added one in the sixth.
Once again, the Saints had the first major opportunity to score, loading the bases in the top of the fourth. But like the first game, Saint Martin's stranded all three runners out on the bases. SMU got another two on the fifth on walks, and one final runner in the seventh.
Schoessler went four innings, striking out four, while allowing five runs, one earned on six hits, and no walks.
Abby Runyon pitched the final two innings, giving up a lone run on four hits.
Saint Martin's takes the rest of February off before returning to action on March 7 to begin GNAC action against Western Oregon at home.
