Cold Offensive Shooting Hands Saints Loss To Simon Fraser

LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's couldn't overcome Simon Fraser's second half offensive shooting, and fell 65-55 on Thursday night.

Saint Martin's (9-11,4-9 GNAC) opened up the first half strong, stretching their lead to as many as nine. However, Simon Fraser's (15-8,10-3 GNAC) offense kicked into gear in the second half, shooting 64 percent from the floor and 55 percent from beyond the arc, while holding the Saints to 35 percent from the field goal range and 14 percent from the 3-point range.

Three different Saints scored 41 of the Saints' points, including Janealle Sutterlict who led with 17. Bria Thames followed with 14, adding eight rebounds. Claire Dingus recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on the night.

Both teams went basket-for-basket in the first quarter, with the Saints holding the advantage throughout the first nine minutes. Simon Fraser tied it at 10-10 which held for the remaining minute of the period.

SFU grabbed the first lead in the second quarter, going on a six point run in the opening minutes. Saint Martin's responded with 10 straight points, to take the lead 20-16. SMU continued to pull away for the rest of the quarter behind the efforts of four different scoring Saints to make the score 29-22 by the break.

Saint Martin's offense went cold in the third quarter, and Simon Fraser capitalized with back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game. Neither team could hold a lead for the rest of the period, with the score tying four different times. The quarter ended with the advantage for Simon Fraser, 42-39.

After baskets from Thames and Emily Nelson gave SMU the lead, Simon Fraser looked to pull away in the final minutes of the game. SFU scored the next 19 points, stretching their lead to the largest of the game 61-45. Offensive struggles continued for the Saints, and they ultimately fell 65-55.

Saint Martin's shot 19-for-57 (33.3 percent) from the floor, 4-for-17 beyond the arc (23.5 percent), and 13-for-17 (76.5 percent) at the free throw line. The Saints grabbed 35 rebounds, nine assists on 18 turnovers, along with six steals and one block.
