SALEM, Ore. – Despite a strong pitching performance from
Abby Runyon in the second game, the Saints' offense never really got going all day against Corban, falling in both ends of the doubleheader on Wednesday.
The opener went all the way of Corban, who's offense was fueled by three home runs. The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning to establish a strong lead. They added to the pressure with six runs in the third and five more in the fourth.
Saint Martin's collected five hits, including a double from
Kylee Vanderbout.
Brandi Schoessler got the start, going two innings, allowing four runs.
Shaye Pinner pitched the final two innings for the Saints; however, control proved to be an issue, allowing six walks, with six hits and 11 runs.
In the second game, pitching came to the forefront, with neither side allowing a run throw the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Corban took the first lead of the game, scoring a run on a RBI single.
The Saints managed to tie the game in the next half inning, starting with a two out bunt single by
Megan Convery. Vanderbout singled in the next at-bat, and an error on the play allowed Convery to come all the way around to score.
In the bottom of the sixth, Corban led off the inning with a double, and after a steal, a sac fly scored the go-ahead run.
The Saints pinch hit with
Delaney Sager to lead off the seventh. Sager rewarded the decision with a triple down the right field line. Then
Lauren Lunt was called upon, and Lunt delivered with a RBI single to tie the game. SMU left runners on the corners while trying to take the lead in the top of the seventh.
After the Saints, and
Abby Runyon left the game game-winning run for Corban on third in the bottom of the seventh; the Saints had an opportunity to take their first lead of the day.
Emily Thornton started the inning on second per the extra inning rule, and later scored on a sac fly by
Regan Byrd.
Corban managed to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, and eventually won the game in the ninth inning to complete the doubleheader sweep.
