Pitching Dominates In Saints' Season Debut – Behind two electric outings from the Saints' freshman arms, Saint Martin's opened the 2021 season with a 10-3 and 3-0 victories over Pacific on Saturday.
Abby Runyon (1-0) got the first game, going all seven innings, and allowing only three earned runs with three strike outs. The Saints (2-0) exploded in the sixth inning with seven runs, to break open the game, before a
Karley Yoshioka two-run bomb sealed the game in the seventh. In the second game,
Tia Ridings (1-0) wasted no time to establish herself inside the circle. The freshman lefty tossed a 3-hit, complete game shutout, and a
Kylee Vanderbout two-run home run sealed the doubleheader sweep.
Sweeping GNAC Awards –
Kylee Vanderbout and
Tia Ridings captured the opening week's GNAC Batter and Pitcher of the Week awards respectively. Vanderbout connected on two game-changing hits in the doubleheader, starting with a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs, and broke open the first game. In the second game, she hit a two-run blast in the second inning to cap off her five RBI day. Ridings pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing five hits, and striking out five. Ridings blanked the Boxers, and led the Saints to a 3-0 victory.
Talk About A First Impression – Freshman
Tia Ridings and
Britney Patrick wasted no time making an impact in the opening weekend. Ridings tossed her first career complete game shutout, while Patrick went 4-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored.
Out Of The Gates Hot – The Saints began last season on fire, going 4-1 in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas. Their lone loss was against UT Tyler, who reached top-5 in the final 2020 poll. After a 1-3 trip to Southern California, the Saints opened conference with two out of three victories, including a dramatic comeback over Western Oregon in extra innings. The Saints ended the year 9-7 overall, marking their eighth winning season in the last nine years.
Beep Beep, Zoom Zoom – The Saints were an unstoppable force on the base paths last season. SMU has recorded 36 stolen bases in 44 attempts, and rank 18th in the NCAA with 2.3 stolen bases per game. Norwood led the team overall with 13 total.
Breakout Behind The Plate – In 2020,
Julia Lucas established herself as one of the top catchers in the West Region. After hitting .143 in 2019 with 0 home runs and three RBIs, Lucas hit .380 with one home run, and 10 RBIs in just 50 at-bats in 2020.
