Saints Can't Fight Off Vikings

LACEY, Wash. - Saint Martin's was unable to get its offense going until it was too late in the 74-83 loss to Western Washington on the road.

Saint Martin's got off to a great start and built a 29-24 lead in the first 15 minutes, but the Saints struggled to get shots to fall the rest of the game until the two-minute mark in the second half. It was a two-point game, but Western Washington hit the gas and built a run of their own to seal the victory on their home court.

In the first 10 minutes neither team could gain control of the momentum, with the score tying eight different times. Janealle Sutterlict knocked down a 3-pointer to take the final lead of the quarter, which the Saints held to end the quarter 19-18.

Claire Dingus opened up the second quarter with a three to extend the Saints' lead. Baskets from Lauryn Morris and Tierney DeDonatis gave SMU its largest lead of the game at 29-24; however, WWU regained the lead with a 15-0 run. The Vikings held the Saints scoreless for four minutes, and took the momentum heading into the second half.

Western Washington kept its foot on the gas out of the break, pushing its lead to as many as 13. The Saints were unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the period as the Vikings took a 61-50 advantage into the fourth.

Tierney DeDonatis opened up the final quarter with a layup, and WWU answered back with 3-pointer. Dingus and DeDonatis made back-to-back baskets to make it just a five-point game at the seven-minute mark. That's as close as Saint Martin's would get until a Rian Clear three put the Saints within four with just four minutes left to play. After a pair of WWU free throws, baskets from Clear and Dingus made it a two-point game in a last minute comeback attempt. However, Western Washington closed out the game with a 9-2 run to take the home court win.

Dingus and Clear led the way for the Saints with 18 points each, adding nine rebounds and two rebounds respectively. Morris added 10 points and five rebounds, while Emily Nelson recorded six points and four boards.

Saint Martin's as a team shot 25-for-51 (49 percent) from the field, 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) beyond the arc, and 16-for-20 (80 percent) at the line. The Saints out rebounded the Falcons 29-to-32, while collecting 15 assists on 14 turnovers, and grabbed two steals.

The Saints head to Ellensburg, WA on Friday, March 5 to face Central Washington for one of their last games of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with live stats and video available at smusaints.com.
