Runyon Continues To Dominate In Saints' Doubleheader Sweep – Behind a complete game shutout from
Abby Runyon, and an explosive 10-run outburst, the Saints managed to sweep Montana State Billings on the day.
Runyon (3-1) went her for second consecutive complete game shutout, allowing seven hits, with three walks, and two punchouts for the win.
Britney Patrick delivered the only offense the Saints (7-1) needed in the opener, connecting on a two-run home run in the first inning. In the second game, after falling behind 6-1 in the second, the Saints rallied to win 10-6 to take the first two off the Yellowjackets (3-5).
Sweeping GNAC Awards –
Kylee Vanderbout and
Tia Ridings captured the opening week's GNAC Batter and Pitcher of the Week awards respectively. Vanderbout connected on two game-changing hits in the doubleheader, starting with a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs, and broke open the first game. In the second game, she hit a two-run blast in the second inning to cap off her five RBI day. Ridings pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing five hits, and striking out five. Ridings blanked the Boxers, and led the Saints to a 3-0 victory.
Lights Out Pitching –
Abby Runyon and
Tia Ridings have combined to be the best pitcher combo in the GNAC. Over 48 innings of work, the two have only allowed 12 earned runs, while striking out 33 batters, pitching seven complete games, and three shutouts. As a team, the Saints' 2.29 ERA is by far the lowest in the GNAC with Western Washington second at 3.43.
Defense Wins Championships – The Saints boost the best defense in the GNAC, leading with a team fielding percentage of .973.
Talk About A First Impression – Freshman
Tia Ridings and
Britney Patrick wasted no time making an impact in the opening weekend. Ridings tossed her first career complete game shutout, while Patrick went 4-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored.
Out Of The Gates Hot – The Saints began the non-conference schedule on fire, winning seven of their first eight games, including five in a row. They feature wins over Pacific, Whitworth, and Montana State Billings.
Beep Beep, Zoom Zoom – The Saints were an unstoppable force on the base paths this season. SMU has recorded 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts, and rank second in the GNAC in stolen bases.
Breakout Behind The Plate – In 2020,
Julia Lucas established herself as one of the top catchers in the West Region. After hitting .143 in 2019 with 0 home runs and three RBIs, Lucas hit .380 with one home run, and 10 RBIs in just 50 at-bats in 2020.
