BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington used two strong pitching performances to best the Saints on both ends of the doubleheader, 3-2 and 6-1, on Saturday.
Savannah Owen held one of the top offense's in the region in check for a majority of the first game before a seventh inning walk-off home run clinched the 3-2 victory for Western Washington (9-3). Then
Destiny Conerly provided the lone run support with her solo home run in the second game as Saint Martin's (8-4) dropped the doubleheader and series.
The Vikings scored in the second and the third inning to open the day up before
Kylie Lopez got SMU on the board in the fourth. The senior drove in one on her double down the left field to cut the lead in half. Karley Yoskioka's RBI single in the sixth tied the game up at 2-2. In the seventh inning with one out, Western Washington reclaimed the lead and the win on a blast to left field.
Owen (1-2) went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits, with one strikeout.
In the second game, Conerly hit her first home run of the season in the third inning but it was too little, too late for SMU. Western Washington had scored four in the second inning, then added insurance runs in the third and fifth to claim the series.
Abby Runyon pitched the first 4.1 innings, before
Lexi Carlos came in to pitch final 1.2 scoreless innings.
Saint Martin's continues their road trip with four games at Northwest Nazarene, beginning on March 19 at noon. Live stats and streaming information will be available on smusaints.com.
