DUPONT, Wash. – No Saint Martin's team has ever been able to accomplish what the 2021 men's team did on Tuesday afternoon, claim the GNAC Championship title.
COMPLETE RESULTS
Defending their home course at The Home Course, Saint Martin's held off an amazing comeback attempt from Western Washington to claim the program's first ever conference championship.
Tyler Fitchett, who entered the tournament as the favorite in the field, did not disappoint. The lefty also made history, becoming only the second Saint ever to win the Medalist award, since Hiro Nezu in 2008.
Fitchett (69-72-73-214) began the day with a sizable lead and the senior did not let up in the third and final round. His strong start of three birdies on the front nine, resulted in him being two-under par heading into the turn. However, after earning bogeys on three of the first four holes on the backend, Fitchett settled down and shot five straight pars to clinch both titles.
Jordan Terada (75-71-74-220), who went from the Saints' five spot, all the way to a top-five finish, earning fourth place overall. Terada went for four birdies on the front nine, coming in at one-under par, and the third lowest score on the team for the day.
Max Turnquist (75-70-76-221), outside of two double-bogeys, played even par on the day with three birdies on the day. He finished tied for sixth overall in the field.
Dennis Geissler (76-75-74-225) played some of the most consistent golf for the Saints, recording 15 pars in the round, and one birdie.
Nick Baker (75-81-72-228) saw the largest improvement of any Saints, shooting a team-best even par on the final day, and helping the Saints to the championship.
Entering the round, Saint Martin's (294-288-293-875) held a 12 stroke lead over Montana State Billings, and 13 strokes over Western Washington. However, it was the Vikings who shot a tournament best 282 in the final round to make it close coming down the stretch. But the Saints clean up their play down the stretch, and found themselves hoisting the trophy for the first time ever.
With the victory, the Saints clinch a spot in the NCAA West/South Central Super Regional, hosted at The Home Course on May 5-8.
