ELLENSBURG, Wash. – After a recent slump, the Saints' bats came alive in the doubleheader split with Central Washington, scoring a total of 16 runs in two games.
Saint Martin's (9-9, 1-5 GNAC) jumped out to early leads in both games, and led 7-1 and 8-0 in both games before late comebacks by Central Washington (8-8, 4-2 GNAC). The Wildcats managed to come all the way back in the opener, stunning the Saints 9-8 before the Saints held on game two, taking it 8-6.
The Saints did a majority of their damage in the first game in the opening innings, and the fourth inning. Saint Martin's led off with three runs, before tacking on another four in the fourth. Karly Yoshioka and
Destiny Conerly each drove in two runs to help the Saints open up a 7-1 lead.
However, Central Washington began chipping away in the fifth, and sixth inning, before completing the comeback and winning in the bottom of the seventh on a bunt single to the pitcher.
After a solo home run in the first game,
Julia Lucas delivered to begin the second game. This time a two RBI single down the right field line. In the third, the Saints' capitalize on Central Washington miscues and ultimately took a 7-0 lead.
After an insurance run in the fifth for SMU, Central Washington responded with runs in the final three innings, cutting the lead down to just two. Reliever
Lexi Carlos was called in, and the freshman earned her first save of her career, recording the final two outs.
