PORTLAND, Ore. – The Saint Martin's women's basketball team will enter the season flying under the radar in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, as the preseason coach's poll has them picked to finish eighth out of the ten teams in the conference.
COMPLETE RELEASE
After a 13-14 campaign last year, the Saints have lost their top scorer in the form of
Claire Dingus. In additional, Saint Martin's will see their point guard from last season,
Tierney DeDonatis move to the sideline as an assistant coach, thus, leaving another huge hole for coach
Christy Martin to fill. The returning starters are
Emily Nelson,
Lauryn Morris, and defending all-conference selection
Rian Clear.
Clear will be one of the players expected to score the bulk of the points this season after a 2021-22 campaign that saw her 12.6 PPG and 4.5 RPG. She was first on the team hitting 35% of her 88 three-point attempts and is the top returning assister with 48 last season. Morris will bring back her high percentage shooting as she led the team with 49% shooting from the field to go with 85% from the charity stripe that helped her to 7.6 PPG. Nelson will return to being a presence on the low block, after averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest last year to go along with 5.8 points per game.
Other returners to squad to watch out for include
Janealle Sutterlict,
Chenoa Louie, and
Iternite Reed. Transfer
Anjel Galbraith, as well as freshman
Mya Hatchett-Groce, look to be newcomers that add to the backcourt, while 6'4" first year
Sarah Lamet will be adding some healthy size to the low block.
Your first chance to catch the Saints in action will be next Friday, October 28
th with an exhibition against NAIA foe Bushnell University. Tipoff is set for 6 PM at Marcus Pavilion.
