CHICO, Cali. – The Saint Martin's women's basketball team (2-1) ran by the Sonoma State Seawolves (1-2) Friday evening, thanks to double-digit scoring from four different Saints, as well as another strong defensive showing.
Lauryn Morris and
Rian Clear led the charge in scoring with a dozen each.
Clear scored the first bucket for the Saints, and after the Seawolves responded with three straight points to take the lead, it was a layup from Mya Hatchett-Groce that put SMU back in front. Clear and Hatchett-Groce once again traded buckets, but this time it was Hatchett-Groce from distance, though, to put Saint Martin's up 9-3. Kiana Rios also added a three in the first quarter and after Anjel Galbraith nailed a buzzer beater layup as time expired, the Saint had a 23-14 advantage going into the second frame.
The first quarter was the most productive offensively for the Saints, but their defense got better as the game went on, allowing 12, 13, and 10 points in the final three quarters, respectively. Saint Martin's also held the opposing five Seawolves starters to a grand total of 17 points, a staggering number. Apart from Clear and Morris getting a dozen each, the Saints also had Rios with 11 and Galbraith with 10.
The Saints will do battle with host Chico State (1-2) tomorrow at 1 PM at Acker Gymnasium.
