DeDonatis' Clutch Plays Leads Saints To Overtime Win Over SPU

SEATTLE – Trailing by six with just a minute left at Seattle Pacific, Tierney DeDonatis connected on a 3-pointer to pull the Saints within three. On the following possession, DeDonatis came away with the steal, and Rian Clear hit another 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. Saint Martin's ran away with the game in the extra five minutes to knock off the Falcons on the road.

DeDonatis led the way for the Saints (11-10, 3-9 GNAC) with 23 points, six assists, two steals, and just two turnovers. Claire Dingus nearly finished with a double-double at 14 points, nine rebounds. Along with Emily Nelson's 10 points, and Rian Clear's nine, the four combined for 56 of the Saints' 58 points.

The Saints opened the game on a 13-5 run and looked in control of the game in the early goings. In the final three minutes, the Falcons closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to two.

Emily Nelson scored the opening points of the second quarter, but it proved to be the only offense of the quarter for SMU. Seattle Pacific scored the next 13 points of the quarter and ended the first half on a 19-2 run to take a 24-15 lead into the break.

Over the course of the third quarter, Saint Martin's turned a double-digit deficit into just a two-point game before a last second 3-pointer from SPU brought it to 34-29.

Seattle Pacific quickly stretched the lead back to 11 at the start of the fourth quarter. A jumper from Claire Dingus began the comeback. DeDonatis connected on a 3-pointer, followed by another field goal to make it 46-40 with two minutes left.

The Saints came up with two defensive stops, the second being a turnover which led to another DeDonatis 3-pointer to make it 46-43. Needing another stop, the Saints got it from the senior point guard who picked the pocket of SPU, and found Clear on the run out, who tied the game with another 3-pointer. SPU missed the game-winning shot, and sent it to overtime.

Saint Martin's kept the momentum rolling in overtime, scoring the first seven points. After an SPU 3-pointer, the Saints iced the game at the free throw line by going 5-for-6, and sealed the victory 58-51.

The Saints return home to face Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 5:15 PM part of a doubleheader night of action. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
