ELLENSBURG, Wash. – There was no stopping
Malia Pinder and
Destiny Conerly at the plate on Sunday, as the two combined for four home runs, including a Pinder grand slam, and 11 RBIs in the Saints' 12-10 win over Simon Fraser.
The second game of the doubleheader was halted in the third inning due to lack of daylight with the Saints leading 8-2. The game will be resumed at a later date.
Simon Fraser (5-6) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning before the Saints (3-5) responded back in the second inning.
Kekai Schultz began the scoring with an RBI single up the middle to put the Saints on the board. After
Destiny Salamanca walked to load the bases with one out, Pinder delivered the crushing blow with one swing. Her grand slam was the first of the season for the Saints, and her third home run of the year to tie the game at 5-5.
It was Pinder striking again in her third at bat, going yard again, her fourth of the season, in the fourth to put SMU on top 6-5. After a Simon Fraser two run blast in the fourth, Conerly jumped on the home run wagon, connecting on a solo shot down the left field line to tie it up.
SFU added two in the fifth again before the Saints struck again in the sixth. An error, along with RBI doubles from
Vanessa Smoke and Conerly jumped the Saints back into the lead at 10-9.
Simon Fraser forced extra innings with a run in the seventh, and a quite eighth inning led to the ninth. Once again, it was Conerly coming through in the clutch, delivering the game-winning two-run home run to deep center.
Kylie Parsons closed the door in the ninth and sealed the 12-10 victory.
The Saints return home on Saturday, March 5 for a doubleheader against Western Oregon at 12:00 PM. Live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
