MISSOULA, Mont. – There was no shortage of headlines in the Saints' doubleheader win over Montana State Billings from
Tia Ridings' new career-high 13 strikeouts, to a comeback seventh inning win.
Last Saturday, Ridings set a career-high in strikeouts at 12 against Central Washington. That record held for only a couple days as Ridings punched out 13 Yellowjackets on Thursday afternoon.
She recorded her first strikeouts in the second inning, followed by three in the third. Ridings punched out two more in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh inning, ending the game with her career-setting mark.
Vanessa Smoke's two RBI single in the third was the Saints' lone run support until the seventh.
Kylee Vanderbout and Smoke combined to drive in another three runs to put the game out of reach at 5-0.
Both offenses came alive in the second game, starting with
Kekai Schultz's three-run home run in the first inning. The Saints' lead stretched out to as many as 5-1 on RBI from
Malia Pinder and Vanderbout.
Montana State Billings rallied back to take an 8-6 lead in the sixth inning, forcing the Saints to come up clutch in the seventh.
Down to their final outs,
Olivia Schmidt tied the ballgame up with a triple to right field, scoring both
Britney Patrick, and Schultz.
Shay Lopes followed suit with a double, bringing in Schmidt to give the lead back to the Saints, 9-8.
In the final frame, Montana State Billings put the tying run on third base with just one out before
Abby Runyon shut the door with a fly-out and a strikeout.
The Saints take on Montana State Billings tomorrow at 11 AM PT for the series finale doubleheader.
