ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Even though the season did not come to a close how the Saints wanted, there's no denying the success and the historic 2022 campaign for the Saints.
Saint Martin's entered the day needed one victory over Northwest Nazarene to clinch the GNAC Championship and advance to the NCAA West Regional. However, the Nighthawks shutdown the Saints' bats to stave off elimination twice and take home the crown.
On the day, the Saints collected just two runs, both coming on solo blasts, compared to the Nighthawks' 12 runs.
Shay Lopes in game one, and
Malia Pinder in game two accounted for the lone runs of the games.
Northwest Nazarene scored the opening seven runs of the ballgame in the opener, before putting away the game in the sixth with another pair of runs to win 9-1 and force the win-or-go-home finale.
Three runs in the first inning were all Northwest Nazerene were able to score in the second game; however, it was all they needed.
The Saints did not get on the board until the sixth inning with Pinder homered down the right field line to cut the lead to just two. In the seventh,
Kaleena Yra led off with a single down the right field line. But the Nighthawks cut the rally short, recording a strike out, a fielder's choice, and finally a fly out to clinch the GNAC title.
The Saints finished the season 31-20, and their 17 victories were the best most in the conference. Saint Martin's reached the GNAC Championship round for the first time since 2013.
