LACEY, Wash. – With a lone free throw with two seconds to go,
Anjel Galbraith gave the Saint Martin's women's basketball team (1-3) the points they needed to pull the 73-72 upset over Chico State (2-2) and help earn Natalie Marlowe her first win in charge of the program.
After the Saints started with a 2-0 lead, the Wildcats led for most of the contest all the way until the 2:12 mark in the fourth quarter when Galbraith hit a free throw to make it a 67-66 SMU lead. In the ensuing possession,
Lauryn Morris would go on to get an and-one and put SMU up by four. The 'Cats would then answer with six straight to go back up by two before Galbraith would draw a foul and knock down both free throws with 11 seconds left. All tied, Chico missed a layup and as Morris grabbed her 12
th rebound of the night, she immediately called a timeout to advance the ball up the floor. After Galbraith caught the inbounds, she was fouled, sending her to the line where she converted one of two to gave SMU the lead. Chico would miss the final shot to help Marlowe clinch her first Saints win.
Galbraith and Morris would both finish with 20, while Morris had the double-double with 12 boards and Galbraith had seven rebounds and three assists.
Keeli Jade Smith was a big part of the offense as well with 14 points and seven assists, while
Kiana Rios chipped in 10.
The Saints will play back at home on Tuesday, November 21
st for the Inaugural Sofie's Scoops Crosstown Classic against Evergreen State College. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7 PM at Marcus Pavilion.
