LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's softball team (13-6, 4-2 GNAC), led by an outstanding performance from the pitching trio of
Chloe Leverington,
Tia Ridings, and
Abby Runyon, were all over the MSU Billings Yellowjackets (8-15, 2-6 GNAC) this weekend. It was three big wins for the Saints by scores of 2-1, 6-2, and 7-0, before MSUB took the final game of the series 2-1. Runyon fired a no-hitter on Saturday, while
Kekai Schultz was the horsepower behind the SMU offense, notching four total RBIs.
Game one on Saturday was a dynamic defensive performance from the starter Ridings and Leverington in relief. After MSUB got one past Ridings in the first, the lefty went into the fifth allowing just five hits on the day and striking out six. Leverington inherited a jam and easily dispensed it, going on to pitch the final 2.1 innings, retiring all seven batters she faced, three by strikeout.
The offense wasn't enormous by any means, but the SMU bats did what was needed. In the bottom of the first,
Britney Patrick came through with an RBI single to score Agena, and Schultz gave Saint Martin's the winning run in the fourth with a solo blast to left center. It was his third home run of the season.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 2, MSU-Billings 1
It was all Runyon in game two Saturday and the fourth-year player fired the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in the 6-2 win. She breezed through the Billings lineup as the Yellowjackets didn't give her trouble until the final frame when a hit by pitch, two walks, an error, and a sac fly broke up the shutout but kept the no-no. A groundout to second was all she needed to clinch the big achievement with a zero in the hit column.
Offensively, SMU were aided by four Billings errors but in the end, only one of Saint Martin's six runs went unearned. The Saints started off with an RBI groundout from
Destiny Conerly. In the third, Schultz doubled to both Conerly and Agena. That was followed by a Patrick double to score Schultz. Finally, both
Olivia Schmidt and Conerly notched another RBI thanks to a groundout and sac fly, respectively.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 6, MSU-Billings 2
Again, Ridings and Leverington teamed up for a dominated win, this time on Sunday. Ridings allowed just two hits and struck out seven over five innings. She did not walk or hit any batters. Leverington followed that up with two innings of hitless softball to blank the Yellowjackets.
Schultz had another RBI double in the contest.
Olivia Matlock had the first double of her collegiate career to score a run.
Shelby Lawson tacked on a run via sac fly. A
Haley Agena two-RBI double that scored Schmidt and
Marisol Bergstrom put the icing on the cake, while Conerly's RBI single put the cherry on top.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 7, MSU-Billings 0
Runyon again performed well on Sunday, but the Yellowjackets found a crack and put up two in the third. Runyon allowed just four hits and struck out seven to no walks. Leverington continued her reign as one of the best relief pitchers in the country, pitching two innings of one-hit ball and not allowing a run.
The lone offensive run for the Saints came off a Patrick RBI groundout in the first. Agena scored on that play, her sixth scored run of the weekend, which led the entire GNAC.
FINAL: MSU-Billings 2, Saint Martin's 1
The Saints have nearly two weeks off before getting back in action on March 31
