LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's men's golf team was absolutely clicking on day two of their only home tournament of the 2023-24 school year. Apart from, as a team, getting the best score of all 13 teams in attendance,
Max Turnquist absolutely turned it on despite less than ideal weather conditions, and fought his way to a tie for first place. Then, in a dramatic playoff with Cal State-Easy Bay's Easton Hether for the individual title, Turnquist shot a ball within inches of the cup to claim the trophy on an easy tap in.
Turnquist wasn't the only Saint that turned heads as returners and newcomers alike had a lot of success at The Home Course with Saint Martin's coming in fourth as a team.
Kyle Erwin had a 70 in round one, a 73 in round two, then went 74 in round three to finish at just one-over for the tournament. Nick Ennis contributed heavily in the first round with a 74,
Carter Sheets had a 73 on the final day, and Chase Gardner's middle round was a 73.
"I'm very pleased with the way our guys played and battled for every shot out there," said Head Coach Zach Dietz, "Even when we got bad breaks or hit good shots that didn't go in, we were able to put it behind us and take it one hole at a time. We just played golf and let the results take care of themselves. A top 4 finish is solid in this sport, and of course, I couldn't be more excited for Max winning the tournament! Especially in the fashion that he did it being down 4 shots with only 3 holes to play. An Eagle on his 53rd hole under the circumstances was so clutch. He showed great mental strength and led us to a solid finish."
The Saints are already on to their next tournament at the Western Washington University Invitational in Bellingham. That tournament will happen on Monday, September 25, and Tuesday, September 26.
