Women's Basketball Drops First Contest of the Season to Point Loma

SMU Women's Basketball was defeated by Point Loma on Saturday, November 23rd, 59-46.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Saint Martin's Women's Basketball (4-1) faced the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions to round out their road trip to California.

The Saints would start the game by getting the ball to some of the team's top point-scorers, Jada Travis and Avery Oaster, who got the Saints on the board early. Oaster, unfortunately, would only record one basket due to an injury in the first period that would take her out of action for the night. Travis would become the main scorer for the Saints following the injury, and she would end up scoring 21 points, which was the highest between either team during the game. She would also lead the Saints in assists with three while also grabbing five rebounds in a well-rounded performance. Travis would be aided on offense by Madelyn Brown, who would score seven points while also tallying a total of six steals, proving to be a real problem for the Sea Lions as the game continued. PLNU would keep their lead over the Saints with efficient first-half shooting, and while SMU would keep pace, they would trail at halftime, 31-26.

In the second half, the Saints would find help from Keeli Jade Smith, Sabrina Lopez, and Sarah Lamet, who would find the basket on a multitude of occasions and find work in the paint. Lamet would provide an intimidating presence on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds, while Kiana Rios would add five of her own. Even with the plethora of contributions from SMU's bench, Point Loma would find answers for the Saints' offense throughout the second half to keep their lead for the final 20 minutes of the game. The Sea Lions would pull away in the end to win by a score of 59-46, handing the Saints their first loss of the season.

SMU Women's Basketball will be back in action this upcoming weekend, as they'll compete in Seattle Pacific's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 29th and Saturday, November 30th.
