Women's Basketball Falls to Washington State in Exhibition Clash

SMU Women's Basketball was defeated by Washington State University on Sunday, December 15th, 76-48.

PULLMAN, WA — SMU Women's Basketball (7-2, 1-1 GNAC) traveled to the storied Beasley Coliseum on Sunday to take on the Washington State Cougars in an exhibition matchup.

Despite playing against Division I competition, the Saints would be up to the challenge against a solid West Coast Conference squad in WSU. The team would be ready to compete from the jump and would be helped by the return of sophomore forward Avery Oaster, who had missed the previous four weeks of competition with a sprained ankle. The Saints' scoring efforts would be spearheaded by Sarah Lamet, who would put up a season-high and team-leading 16 points. She would finish the game with seven rebounds as well and led the team in steals with two. Kiana Rios would follow closely behind with 13 points, two rebounds, and an assist, while Jada Travis would be the main ball distributor with eight points, six assists, and five boards. Kiana would be an efficient scorer, but early foul troubles would lead to her missing a good chunk of the first half. While the Saints would be able to stick around early and take advantage of scoring opportunities, turnovers would be costly as the Cougars would take a 41-26 lead going into halftime.

Lamet would continue to lead the offense in the second half and would be aided by Madelyn Brown and Keeli Jade Smith, who would each contribute three points to the total, along with a handful of assists and boards. Kasey Booster and Sabrina Lopez would record minutes for the Saints in the team's rotation off the bench, and Iternite Reed would also stand out on defense in the ten minutes she was on the court. Even with the team's best efforts, the Cougars would keep their double-digit lead through the end of the game and take the win, 76-48.

The Saints will return home to Marcus Pavilion on Tuesday to face the Multnomah Lions in a non-conference contest. You can get tickets and more information here.
